Washington Public Campaigns - a party platform

It has oft been said that a Democratic and a Republican candidate are two sides of the same coin. This is a contentious issue that I am best equipt to discuss. However, I do see the logic. Much of what I see as negative in politics is the need to fundraise and buy votes.

Washington Public Campaigns and Clean Elections are a response to just that issue. If politicians could be relieved from the hours, weeks, and months of fundraising could the great issues of our time be discussed and resolved?

Question: Should Washington Public Campaigns be not just an organization - but a political party? In the decade before the Civil War, political parties were formed to become new voices for issues of great importance. Is it time to form a new party that works to resolve the money divide between candidate and representative?

Must... be... good Democrat...

Screw that, I've been having reoccurring thoughts the last few weeks about how someone would start a new party in Washington, and what problems they would likely want to take on. Legally, its actually pretty simple, since the laws governing minor political parties are pretty thin. The main issue for me would be avoiding the quixotic efforts of trying to elect a governor or senator, but rather focusing on a handful of local races each year, like county commissioner or state legislator. So I voted yes.

this movement has an absolutely critical job to do.  Becoming a political party will obscure that.

We need clean elections!

Maybe, once clean elections were the law of the land...

I'm with Noemie. Extending the franchise, voter rights, election integrity, and election reform (what WPC is doing) are all non-partisan issues.

Is Washington Public Campaigns a progressive issue? Why do we say that something is a non-partisan issue? Aren't parties supposed to stand for the most important issues?

Over the past century, hasn't the "party system" forced us to split with our family and friends over splinter issues - instead of uniting us on fundamental issues???

Its not like several counties haven't made public financing part of their platforms. And, if they haven't, I could easily imagine a world where they did. If was just a matter of getting the members of a party to agree with you, then we'd be there, wouldn't we?

Nietzche said God is dead, but people kept going to church. He knew that.

Scientists have declared, through MRIs and brainwave monitoring and metabolic uptake studies that "das Ich" is dead. Yet they still say "I blah blah blah".. and still watch out for their own self-interest.

Parties are dead. Trust me. (I hope this is not news to all of you.) But people will still join them, or excoriate them from afar as suits their spleen.

I think the Greens would be smart to become a club.

So: what's to stop clean elections folks from being a club?
