Both the new Crosscut and the old Seattle Weekly have had pretty good stories about the coming arbitration battle that may leave just one daily publishing in Seattle. But, the best place to look for real insight into what's going on may be the reporter's own union blog. From the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild Blog:
The atmosphere is getting tense!Well, we wouldn't be surprised if the drumbeat of internal company communications begins any day now.
With the JOA arbitration set to begin Monday, The Seattle Times will likely start issuing internal communiques to employees designed to scare them into thinking they'll be laid off June 1 if the arbitrator's decision goes against the company.
Over at the P-I, there will be the usual stony silence, broken only by a terse e-mail from Publisher Roger Oglesby exhorting the troops to stay focused and not to forget that Hearst is in it to win it.
