Seattle MoveOn Peace Vigil at Westlake

MoveOn.org always seems to inform its members of an upcoming national demonstration they're sponsoring with only a few days days notice, but someone always steps up to the plate and volunteers to organize. Lots of pictures below:

Yesterday must've been the 100th antiwar protest I've done since the worldwide "NO!" in March, 2003. Our righteous anger needs an outlet, yet those in power don't listen or care.

I spent the day making up a bunch of signs to share with fellow protestors, like those at left (that's me).

I do feel a good bit of satisfaction by expressing myself this particular way - at the same time it's sad that it's not nearly as many as I wish it would be, who care enough to participate, and mostly the same members of the Peace & Justice community I repeatedly see next to me.

This vigil featured reading of names from the list of killed in action, and singing of peace songs, lead by Janice Stecher of Rebel Voices and several members of the Seattle Labor Chorus. The Westlake passersby mostly didn't seem to even notice.

To be honest, I'm a little impatient with singalongs. I prefer to be thrilled by strong singers like Janice and inspired by great songs, rather than a weak choir of us ordinary folks repeating dumbed-down chants and refrains. But that's just me.

Am I the only person who winces at hearing "Give Peace a Chance"? That has to be the whiniest peace song of all time. Repeating the line "All we are saaaaayyyyyingggg..." thousands of times didn't work in the sixties, and it won't work now. What's next - "Kumbaya"? I want to destroy some Neocons, dammit!

God, am I becoming a curmudgeon or what? Get a grip, Dina...

Operation Democracy, I found out, is THIS:
"On Thanksgiving Eve of the year 1947, a group of Locust Valley people met at the Matinecock Neighborhood House to launch a movement of help and friendship between Americans and the peoples of war-torn Europe which has since become known to the world over as Operation Democracy. Underlying this movement was the belief that peace cannot be achieved by governments alone but must start in the hearts of people themselves. It was felt no government process could be a substitute for human understanding and that some way had to be found for the average American to do something about peace."

Really? Everyone knows troops and tanks sent in to liberate such countries works every time. AND then installing a pro-U.S. leader, a McDonald's and American pop songs. That is enough to engender the undying gratitude of the populace. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Don't think about killing. Think about cupcakes!

and vigils has changed over time.   The faster the protest culture changes with the times, the more effective it'll be.  Yes, and let's change-out the songs!

But I feel the public demonstrations are still needed and I participate when I can.  Silence in the face of warmongering and assault on democracy would be worse.  Thank you for posting these pictures, Dina.  It's part of the evolution of protests -- putting them in the Internet public square. It's very moving to see these, to see this visual representation of the hunger people have for peace and justice.

I put the word 'organizing' in quotes cuz

why are these things 'organized' at the last minute?

it is so f$$$ing rude, inconsiderate and disorganized

like everyone is just sitting around waiting for the word to come down from on high and we'll take to the streets cuz, from on high, THE WORD came down!

I love feeling like the little birdy waiting for the big birdies to come and puke sustenance into my straining for nourishment beak!

yawn ... how f$$$ing inept can we get?

p.s. for those of you new to my critiques of our hard working hardly effective majorly clueless political 'leaders', check out

What amazes me,
What inspires me,
What fills me with hope,

is that despite the degradations from complete nimcompoop opposition

HA HA HA HA HA

'leaders'

despite shitty leadership from people who should be fired yesterday

fellow citizens won't sit down and shut up !

imagine all the leaders,
sucking up big paychecks,
not being worthless shits,
helping organize the world!

what lyrics, eh?

oh yeah, as a reminder - I already got a job, and if I don't do my 40+ hour a week job I'll be living under the ballard bridge in cardboard box,

so for anyone who tells me that I'm supposed to do the job of the Dem political leaders making big paychecks to be leaders!

Stuff it!

Dina, I agree with you absolutely. I was a participant at the MoveOn Peace Vigil yesterday evening, and it seemed to me that us "old lefties" and long-time peace activists were preaching to the same choir over and over. And we were the only ones there. These rallies give us a good feeling, but are totally ineffective in changing any governmental policy or even any public perception. To be effective, MoveOn and other like groups MUST find some way to get public and media attention and to engage public participation. It is obvious that the Seattle public is anti-war and wants a change, but we must get them engaged. An event like last night could have been a mass demonstration of thousands of people, but we have to get the word out and give out info that will motivate a public response.
