Four more years of commissioner Keane?

[Front paged: NM]

Five years ago, Dane Keane while representing the citizens of Douglas County as an elected official was caught tossing an empty beer can from his county vehicle into a county dumpster and then failed the breathalyzer.

Right after getting off probation for that DUI he drove into an automatic car wash the wrong direction and hit a fence as he tried to back out. A few minutes later, he nearly runs a couple off the road as he swerved into their lane. Then, after skimming 19 feet of guardrail he arrives at his destination. Luckily, nobody was hurt or killed; just some scrapes and dents on the county SUV.

While his two co-workers confiscate his phone because he is such a workaholic, Jim Barker, Douglas County Administrator, checks his vehicle for open containers or prescriptions bottles. His AA sponsor shows up just in time to drive him to a nice rehabilitation clinic in Chelan. Although no one ever admitted that prescription drugs or alcohol were factors in Dane's behavior that morning. (Later both Dane and his mother were telling anyone that would listen how Dane was now clean and that according to his mother he was not even taking cough syrup..)

Seemingly, his coworkers remembered to call everyone but the Sheriff and his wife. By the time a deputy arrives Keane is without a phone and gone from the scene. When the deputy goes to his house looking for him, his wife apparently does not know where he is either.

Had it been anyone else the law would have been waiting on the courthouse steps to ask questions, run tests, and search the vehicle. Douglas County voters need to ask themselves if they could pull something like this off in a company vehicle on company time, or any time in any vehicle. Being an elected official does not make one above the law. If he and his co-workers condone these kind of actions then Douglas County voters need to think very carefully before they cast their votes this fall.

I have heard some citizens of Douglas County say that they do not approve of Keane's behavior and that he is not a good commissioner but they have known him for years so they are going to vote for him.

I wonder if these people know how stupid this sounds. First ballots are secret so Keane will never know who did or did not vote for him, second would these people really rather have another four years (this will make Keane's FOURTH term) of a loose cannon. I have always heard the gene pool in Douglas County was very limited and this election just may confirm that.

This may sound too crazy to be true but you can look all of this information up and more about Keane by going to the Wenatchee World archives.

I don't think there's a need for a limited gene pool theory - voters everywhere elect people against their own interests.  I hear the frustration there, though.
