When will Washington go Single Payer?

Today the state of Pennsylvania, a most fitting state indeed, being one of the original colonies to declare independence from the totalitarian rule of a feudal lord, declared independence from the feudal insurance lords and endorsed by universal vote single-payer healthcare.

"Whereas, the passage of this legislation would provide a model for the U.S. and would attract business to Pennsylvania; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Pa. State Democratic Committee calls upon all the entire PA legislative delegation to endorse the funding of an Economic Impact Study of the bill and to support the passage of SB400/HB1660 at the earliest opportunity; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution shall be transmitted to all PA. County Commissioners, row officers, the entire PA legislative delegation and to the Governor of Pennsylvania."

The resolution was passed unanimously.  The Governor had already signalled that if passed, he would sign it into law.

Now, of course, the media didn't report that the Governor had said this, made little mention of the event at all and it's likely that many will not hear about it from them anytime soon.  However, the internet age is upon us and the media's power has waned because of it, so word of this is already spreading across the nation.

The only question I have is:  If we're such a blue state, and Democrats have dominated the political scene since the days of Warren Magnuson and Scoop Jackson with few exceptions, why - and most importantly when - will Washington state be passing Single Payer Healthcare?

This state would be a slam dunk supporter of Single Payer.  The Great Northwest supports a huge base of progressives and is perhaps one of the leading progressive population centers in the nation.  It should be a no brainer for our state to be one of the first to follow suit.

Christine Gregoire never struck me as the type to back down from a fight with amajor corporate giant.  I think the "tiger lady" would definately sign such a bill into law.

We just need to see some Dem leadership.

There are good arguments for assuming that single payer could survive the inevitable court challenge, but our legislators just don't care to guess about the probabilities of winning.  They don't want the expensive hassle, period.

I'd say that CA and PA are probably going to beat us.  If Jerry Brown were governor, and the legislature passed single payer yet a third time, he'd probably sign it.  If CA can do it, the whole west coast will probably follow.

...-Ment, if not single pay-er.

Look, America is already at the point where government - in one form or another - already pays more than 50% of healthcare costs.

What government needs to insist on is good data and a single payment standard.

A Washington Healthcare Paperwork Simplification and Public Health Act (or something to that effect) which established a standard set of diagnosis and treatment codes and, more importantly, a central system through which all healthcare payment - public and private - would be process, would help doctors simplify their lives and could get doctors, researchers and public health officials a lot better information.

If Washington D.C. won't create an electronic records system, the state of Washington should and link it to requirements on insurance companies operating within the state so we get some money behind it.
