Health Care Reform - Preexisting Condition Confusion

Some do not realize that the preexisting condition coverage starts this year for adults. It will be temporary coverage that will be replaced with coverage in the exchanges or with private insurers in 2014. The confusion started because it's insurance companies that have until 2014 to start insuring those with a pre-existing condition. Also, they will not charge more for this coverage.

The reform creates a temporary backup plan for those uninsured who have health problems. This Plan is a short-term, national high-risk insurance pool. US citizens and legal immigrants who have preexisting conditions and have been uninsured for at least six months will be eligible to enroll in this pool and receive subsidies to help them afford the premiums. The MAXIMUM out-of-pocket cost for enrollees will be $5,950 for individuals, per year.

I understand that there will still be 15 million people without coverage. Who are these people and why are they the chosen few?

BTW - This is not a rhetorical question.

It allows you to buy seriously overpriced catastrophic coverage which is utterly useless for covering ongoing non-catastrophic medical expenses.  For that reason, few take advantage of it.

A wrinkle in health care reform, and President Obama's advertisements of it, pointed out by the AP: under the new law, insurers will still be able to deny coverage to children on the basis of preexisting conditions until 2014:

Under the new law, insurance companies still would be able to refuse new coverage to children because of a pre-existing medical problem, said Karen Lightfoot, spokeswoman for the House Energy and Commerce Committee, one of the main congressional panels that wrote the bill Obama signed into law Tuesday.

However, if a child is accepted for coverage, or is already covered, the insurer cannot exclude payment for treating a particular illness, as sometimes happens now. For example, if a child has asthma, the insurance company cannot write a policy that excludes that condition from coverage. The new safeguard will be in place later this year.

Thanks Casey, for posting this information. I did not know that coverage for preexisting condition starts this year. I believe that it covers acne conditions too like i am trying to find more on get rid of acne overnight. Since the insurance companies won't charge extra for the coverage, it will benefit all i believe.
