Angry Initiatives

There's a lot of angry talk here in Washington state about our evil government and the educated urban elite who want to steal everyone's land and money. And citizens are taking action.

There's the initiative to prohibit estate and inheritance taxes in Washington, sponsored by Dennis Falk of Fox Island who characterizes this category of taxes as the predation of "the vultures in Olympia."

Tim Eyman's still on his $30 tab fees, and was recently quoted in the PI as asserting that the government has been "spitting in the face of voters."

There's the "Developer's Initiative" AKA "initiative to end zoning" sponsored by the Washington Farm Bureau, for example, that, if passed, would require the government to compensate landowners for economic loss due to environmental restrictions -- thus mooting out many of our environmental protections. A draft of this initiative refers to the need of the people "to ensure government agencies do not damage the use or value of private property," while the director of government relations for the Washington Farm Bureau assumes that land owners are being "disrespected" by the regulations at issue.

Now I see on Hominid Views that King County Journal is reporting a secessionist initiative -- and backup legislation by Representative Toby Nixon.

There's some angry language from the backers of this initiative, as well. You can go to the Cascade Committee web site and read that Jack P. is "tired of being told by the county what I can do with my property," and that Michael A. is "highly sick of Ron Sims and others like him who think that rural KC is just a park for their whimsical use." and that Benjamin has "grown tired of the "educated" few that are in power in King County subjecting their will on the masses."

It's easy for us progressives to see these trends as purely selfish expressions -- or to see them as the result of manipulations by groups like the Building Industry Association of Washington that profit by this anger because it leads to the overturning of protections that hinder their business. But the story is more complex.

Consider, for example, that people may be angry because they are experiencing unfair conditions. Washington State has among the most unfair tax systems in the country. In 2003, it was found to have the most regressive tax structure in the United States. The poor and middle class are being taxed at a much higher percentage than the wealthy -- and surely we feel it. The Seattle Times reported that our state's property taxes weigh much more heavily on people with the lowest income.

The next logical question would be whether this inequity is a government plot -- or a plot of the educated elite, or Seattle urbanites -- or some other group associated with a political philosophy. My answer would be that our unfair situation persists because we lack the political will to address it. I would take a step further in pointing out that one of the major factors inhibiting that public will is the high level of suspicion and anger that prevents citizens from collaborating on constructive action.

Building political will requires political dialogue. Evidently, such dialogue is anathema to the short-term interests of organizations like the BIAW -- which happily use their great power and financial resources to define our issues for us.

So then the next logical question I can think of: how do we put ourselves in a position where our issues are being defined in a ways that lead to solutions? How do we move past the 'us against them' mentality in this state? It's an important question. Regardless of our individual circumstances or political philosophy, the way we answer this question has a direct affect on our lives, our children's lives, our land -- on the totality of our experience in the State of Washington.

From experience...I don't think people are getting mad just about the taxes.  The total arrogance of all aspects regarding private property up for grabs by the biggest bastard is what has soured me.  At no turn has any agency done their job.
My neighbor sold her house...the title company, LandAmerica, TransNation or Commonwealth, whatever they call themselves to avoid the law, tried to steal my land like they stole the other neighbors.  The county signed off the house although it was built in the wrong place!!  They out and out lied, took me to court, lied before the judge (who seemed pissed off to have to hear such trivial cases)the judge is forcing me to pay for their water (yes. it comes out of my pocket)because the water meter serving 3 houses sits on my property.  The code enforcement officer 'Stephanie' doesn't seem to think their dumping of slag into the salmon bearing river bed on MY property is 'significant' but I have not demonstrated responsibility as a property owner to have stopped it.  The 4 Snohomish Deputies that we had out here with their thumbs in their ears didn't count.  The Insurance Commisioner's 'investigation' was somehow investigated and closed before I had filled out the complaint form.  When I received the 'findings' I called and asked how this could be closed??  I still have the complaint form on the kitchen table and am still working on making all the copies.  I was told 'oh well'.  Apparently they only wanted the insurance company's side as told by their attorney's.
Property laws in Washington State are non-existing.  Judges are (RUDE!!) impotent and disinterested, elected officials are too arrogant to fulfill promises.  I'm liking shotgun legislation more and more.  I'll pay my fair share but I want a couple shots.  This is a lawless state for property owners, why should we have to pay so much for something that is up for grabs by the biggest bastard? Angry?  Yeah.  I need someone to pull the knife out of my back so I can write a check to the taxman.
