On Lying

Last night at Northwest Progressive Institute's blog, Andrew wrote a post titled "Pelz campaign playing fast and loose with the truth in bid for state party chair?"  His post continues a line of thinking that I first encountered in a comments thread here at Washblog, and which is extremely disturbing to me.

Let me first state that I despise and resent having to get involved in this type of nonsense.  There are careers and reputations involved here.  Just a week ago, we went to Olympia and spent part of our time trying to convey to legislators that we are to be taken seriously and that we can be trusted not to embarrass them.  We should set high standards for ourselves, and the conversations around the State Party Chair race have been an embarrassment to the candidates, to the blogs, and to the Party.

As I have made clear numerous times here, I have not taken a position in this race.  Nor, given recent activity, will I.  I want my writing to be clear of bias or the assumption of same.  That said, I feel that Dwight has been wronged here.  I've spoken with Dwight, and he is understandably unhappy not just that rumors are being spread, but that they are being taken so seriously.  Today, people printed out Andrew's post and passed it out at meetings Dwight was attending in Skagit and Mason Counties - an action so lacking in class and common sense that it boggles the mind.

Please read below the fold for more.

Consider:  Andrew claimed, first, that there were "suspicions" that Governor Gregoire and Senator Murray had not endorsed Dwight, despite yesterday's letter.  The evidence appears to be that A: neither had "confirmed" their endorsement to unnamed Democrats who had contacted them, and B: The letters were sent without electronic signatures.

Setting aside that I've never heard of a need to "confirm" an endorsement (this sounds suspiciously like the "when did you stop beating your wife" scenario Ivan brought up yesterday), think about it for a moment.  Would anyone in their right mind claim the endorsement of a United State Senator and sitting Governor without first getting said endorsement?  Just think hard about the chutzpah that would entail.

Now in an update, Andrew says he's "hearing" that a pair of staffers authorized the campaign to use the Governor and Senator's names, but the Governor and Senator themselves didn't "personally approve" the endorsement.  I haven't talked to anyone at the Governor's office - like anyone else making inquiries on a weekend, I'm waiting to hear back.  However, Senator Murray's chief of staff authorized the letter from that end - that isn't a staffer.  That's THE staffer.  That's the staffer that doesn't authorize anything without a prior conversation with the Senator. Now, if the standard of proof needed for some of you is personal confirmation from Governor Gregoire and Senator Murray, I'm afraid you'll have to do without.  I won't be keeping them from their work in governance just to slake my curiosity.

Someone's lying here.  I want to know who it is.  Because every lie told is doing harm to the Party.  As I said at the beginning of this post, I think Dwight's being wronged here - but I intend to find out for sure.  If Dwight's lied, he will lose his race.  But if bloggers are lying or being fed information from people who are lying, they need to be exposed for what they are, because every lie from a blog affects the credibility of all blogs.  And I take that pretty personally.

Most people, like me, severely dislike the insidious bullshit.  Kinda like what we accuse the other side of doing, like we're so good & pure.  Chomsky writes that the Democrats can hardly be an opposition party, because we are so much like the other party, policy wise.  He isn't incorrect, and wrt tactics, we certainly match up well here.

You know what, it probably won't matter that much whether Pelz or Ruderman win: both will have their ups and downs, and someone won't like it.  It was the same last year when Berendt won again, lots of us were let down and thought we were pushed aside.  But guess what we did QUITE WELL last year all things considered.

So is this sort of lying BS really worth all the folks it makes throw up their hands and cease to believe any longer?

Andrew should be ashamed of himself, and get his quotes on the record, the innuendo and whispers do nothing to further the debate.

Thanks Switz,

I've gotten the endorsements for various campaigns from four Governors, both U.S. Senators and a variety of Congresspeople. Usually you talk to a staff person who is their designated political person. For example, for McDermott, who rarely endorses, you would talk to Pat Taylor, for example. Or for Cantwell, Kurt Beckett.

...that a lot of what works, and doesn't, in life is dependent to a large degree on ego - who's you placate, who's you stroke, who's you damage.  How you are treated in turn.

When you have a situation such as politics, where you have many, many passionate people involved, folks who feel that they aren't fully recognized for their present or previous efforts, and many people who come to conclude that whatever they decide to do or not do is for "good reasons", but that end up being related to ego in the end, we have what I've been calling, lately, a "high school forever" situation.

Add to that the "hive mind" aspect of the blogs, where everybody can have their say and, in effect, attempt to represent or direct opinion their way by their posts, and raises the intensity of the situation just a bit more.

Right now, for example, there is someone who is a potential candiate for a race that I'm being told is a bad choice for a set of reasons.  One reason is particularly bad - so bad that I simply can't act on this person's comments until I can confirm it or determine if it's fabricated.  It's simply too explosive.

And it's irritating as all get out because, until I heard this specific accusation, I agreed with this person's opinion.

Means versus ends matter.  Mutual repsect, even when you strongly disagree with someone, matters.  (And believe you me, with the current crop of Republicans, that is well and truly hard, hard work.)  Hammer your opponents, when you fight, with reason, with passion, with creativity.

But not with lies, not with baseless innuendo - your butt will always get bit back in the end.

My two bits...

A couple of days ago you said on this very blog, quote "You don't out people's real identities, period."

Now you are saying today: "if bloggers are lying or being fed information from people who are lying, they need to be exposed..."

So it is okay to expose someone if they are lying about Dwight Pelz, but if they are lying on behalf of Dwight Pelz, they should be protected! What a bunch of bullshit this is.

I have been hounded on this blog by the likes of you, N in Seattle, Aexia, Willis, Particle Boy, OldDog, and others. For what reason? Because I don't think Pelz is the right guy for the job, and because I don't want someone from the same old cabal of Seattle elites. Because I think Pelz is another Berendt clone. But that just wont work for you and the other Pelz supporters, I've been troll rated by you, attacked and called names, and on and on. Well guess what, I am not going away.

Not even a peep from you regarding the vicious attacks made on blogs against Greg Rodriguez that forced him to quit the race, remember that? I don't suppose you want to find out the truth on who said those fucking disgusting lies, do you?

You need to take a good long look in the mirror, because now that you have decided to use your blog to shill for Pelz, it is your credibility on the line!

Thanks to Switzerblog for calling people on making unsubstantiated accusations. Anyone can say anything about anyone. That's why you don't say anything unless you can substantiate it. What we write for public consumption can cause harm. We need to be conscious of that.

I post a bit at MLW and Booman and kos, and there are local places I don't post to cuz I hurt people's feelings cuz I am sick of losing for 25 years, and I am sick of the Dem leadership, AND

because I don't know where, between the great people I know on the WA state committee and who are LD chairs and assorted grunts AND "the leaders" something goes sideways.

and this party of great people, great door knocking great phone banking peons, somewhere

"the leaders" turn spineless, and we got decades of losing crappalito.

and people take offense and no NOT tell me and whisper that someone's feelings are / might be hurts and divisiveness is bad and not nice is bad ...

so, I am lurking on this state party fight & wondering if this blog is gonna be so sanitized that people aren't gonna argue & debate?

I know porn when I see it ... and what are mean comments and what are productive comments ... I guess others know when they see it.

Andrew deleted his post.  What was written about Dwight that was bad?  Can some provide facts (important, useful) instead of more analysis (less so)?
