Open Thread - HB 2661 Floor Debate Today

We never have open threads where we can talk about anything, so let's use this as one.  I'll use the Kos format for it - give you a few nuggets of news and let you have at it.

  •  HB 2661 was supposed to be debated on the House floor at 10:00am.  (listen live)  At the moment, they're in caucus, and I'll try to update when they come back to the floor.  (for non-politicos, when they're in caucus, they just recess to a side room, one for Republicans and one for Democrats, and try to hash out party strategy for the floor debate, make deals, whatever else they need to do)(Tim Sheldon, D-35th, sits in the Republican caucus because we don't want him)
Update [2006-1-20 15:35:47 by switzerblog]: Debate is live now, as of 12:35pm.

  •  Competing news on Maria Cantwell.  She's endorsed by the Police and Firefighters today, and has a fundraiser with Hillary Clinton next Friday.  And, to give you folks still working her over about the war a little kick in the butt, she's not sorry about her Iraq vote.  Actually, for my money that's the most detail I've seen on her reasons for her votes.

  •  Party chair comments redacted due to radioactivity

  •  Drilling has started on Beacon Hill for the Sound Transit tunnels.  Huzzah!

  •  Danny Westneat agrees with the League of Washington Taxpayers - deny Bellevue schools their technology levy, because kids shouldn't learn how to use computers.  What's actually wrong here - computers being used in school, or American's idea of why it's important kids use computers in school?

  •  Gay marriage ban is struck down as unconstitutional in Maryland.  Is Washington next?

  •  Finally, we can vote on the three crappy choices for the Washington quarter, due for release in 2007!

I submit the day to you, my friends...

All the quarter designs are lame.  At least the one with the state as background acknowledges that there are parts of the state that are neither marine nor snow-capped.

I think they should have figured out a way to wrap the WashBlog header onto the reverse of the coin.  Now that's representative of the entire state...

I would pick the orca quarter. Maybe they could put the state behind it like in #1, or something.

From the Stephanie Miller show is stuck in my head today, thank you "reverend" Ken Hutcherson!

From blatherwatch:

“Christians stood up and said, 'we ain't taking it any more.' We've got enough people to vote and push our way on you like you-all been pushing on us.”
~
“I want to teach the church what I learned as an African-American...We got just as many rights as anybody else and we have the advantage that God is on our side.”
~
Gay behavior is learned, just like prejudice. It’s a sin to God.
~
I'm lovingly aggressive, [with gays] the same I'd be for a murderer or an adulterer. I give 'em the love of God. If they reject it, I give them the discipline of God.
~
“Same sex marriage was just the thing to wake the sleeping giant of Christian voters in the 2004 election. We're not going to lay it down until we get the marriage amendment.”
~
We have a responsibility to keep the moral standards in our society.”
~
“We're going to win, Is it going to be civil or hostile? If you surrender and accept Him as your Lord and savior, it's going to be civil. You reject Him, it's going to be hostile.”
~

Re the Cantwell article you mentioned ("Regrets--NOT") I shot off a response sorta kicking Maria's ass (see my diary over on the right) and the P-I just called me!!!!

Not to say they definitely WILL publish my letter, just considering it, but I've never even received a call before!!!
