Open thread and cloture vote

Murray - Nay on cloture

Cantwell - Aye on cloture

(Nay means filibuster, aye breaks a filibuster for our newbies and non-political junkies)

Have at it.

[editor's note, by switzerblog] Please aim your ire at the Senator(s) and not each other. Muchas gracias.

Feel free to take you cuts at me.

She says she's "100% pro-choice" yet won't oppose a anti-privacy nominee?  Unacceptable.

I'm tired of the "vote-no Dems who won't filibuster".  It's a bullshit position.

It's so disturbing to see our SCOTUS go down this road.  It isn't even ideology that bothers me - all nominees have ideology, and they have a right to their own interpretation.  What bothers me is that the nominations from this President have nothing to do with jurisprudence or judicial temperament, and everything to do with politics.  The (Republican) leaders of this country have abandoned all pretense of governing in favor of government as a campaign headquarters.  Bleah.  This just makes my stomach hurt.

On the other hand, as Particle Man pointed out, Tim Eyman is taking his douchebaggery to a new level, and helpfully putting together a list of bigots that will be made publicly available.  Thanks for the help, Tim!

The Gregoire money quote:

"I'm surprised someone would file an initiative to say let's discriminate against our fellow citizens," Gregoire said. "It strikes me as counter to the values of the state of Washington to have an initiative now that would say to the people of the state of Washington it's ok to discriminate... against gays and lesbians."

What a douchebag Eyman is.  Oh, and as a former neighbor, I feel qualified to point out that he's also a bad father.

I honestly can't imagine why she wouldn't vote against cloture. I'm baffled. I know she is up for re-election but her vote just pissed me off at her.

I'm really disappointed.

I think she just lost the November election. I've contributed to her several times to help her with her debts from the last campaign and recently for the upcomming campaign. I have a request for $ from her that came in the last week that is going into the trash. I had planned to phone bank and doorbell but not now.

Do we have anyone that will run in the Primary?

  • yes, but by N in Seattle, 01/30/2006 03:58:04 PM PST (none / 0)
Seeing how the cloture vote wasn't close, she decided to go public as being against the filibuster.  If we had 50 Dem Senators (instead of 44) we would have stopped this Alito fellow.  Let's reelect Cantwell and elect Dems elsewhere so we can win these fights in the future.

This...

And this...

And Maria...you just made my twelve-year old daughter's life much, much harder just because she's a female.  It will take a long time, if ever, to fix that.

I take that very personally.

I'd really appreciate it if someone, anyone, could share the rational behind Cantwell's vote with me.

Link to this one. This guy speaks for me.

According to the Seattle PI , Senator Cantwell says, "I must conclude that he would neither show due respect for the authority of Congress nor apply a necessary check to the reach of the executive. With great respect for the institution, I cannot vote to confirm Judge Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States," and then she votes to assure that he is awarded that position.

The senator's apologists continue to tell us that we should support her regardless of these votes because, after we reward her with six more years, she will be more responsive to our values and ideals. Yeah, right.

Maria may be willing to exchange my vote for someone more in the "center" but, if she really thinks she will pull that vote away from McGavick, she had better start working on a better strategy than "I voted for Alito before I voted against him." That one's be done before and we saw where it went.

Please stop this self distruction, I'm beginning to regret finding this forum.
Remember a guy named Slade, who this Mike guy worked for? The one we all worked our butt's off to defeat. Maria's a good solid Democrat and we have enough problems trying to regain COngress without meltdowns's like this.
The cloture vote was lost, it needed 15 of the 18 who voted to end debate. The spin would have been, "oh it's just the do nothing/delaying Democrats again".
I was here on Wednesday after election day 2000. Remember, training day on how to conduct a recount. It shouldn't have ben that close in the Governor's race and we can't afford for it to be that close this here.
