Target Iran

About this Iran thing: Can Bush start another war on his own? Can he do another preemptive strike? Does he need Congress' authorization?

I ask because I've been wondering. Is there anything in place to stop Bush from attacking Iran? Or is it a foregone conclusion? Maybe even an October Surprise?

Last night I was listening to Amy Goodman (Democracy Now) interview Scott Ritter. His new book is Target Iran - The Truth About the White House's Plans for Regime Change. He reiterates all the things that are known to anyone paying attention: Iran has no nuclear weapons, Iran has no intention of having nuclear weapons, Iran's Supreme Leader issued a fatwa stating that nuclear weapons are incompatible with Islam, the weapon's inspectors in Iran haven't found anything, in 2003 Iran tried to normalize relations with America and Isreal, Iran condemned North Korea's recent nuclear test, etc.

Most importantly, though, are two points: One, Bush is hellbent on regime change in Iran. Two, Bush is making shit up. Again. Just like with Iraq.

Seymour Hersh has been talking about this Iran fixation of Bush's for well over a year. Secret military plans. Leaked memos. Naval group recently dispatched to the area. Etc.

I don't watch much TV, so I don't know if the media is playing along this time.

One or both houses of Congress, Bush may attack Iran. If we don't, he'll see it as yet another mandate and will attack Iran.

Bush, as CnC, can take offensive action without Congress' authorization, but this is limited to only a certian number of days.  The War Powers Act details a lot of this stuff.

After a certain amount of time, Bush would have to get Congressional authority.

The interesting part is that the Iran bill (Santorum's bill that Cantwell is signed onto) gives the President a huge amount of power for creating the official determination for what the situation in Iran is.

Obviously the Dems will start bickering loudly.

I'm not sure that the Dem win will be very large, although goddness knows they have ALL the advantages they could possibly hope for this cycle.

thing holding jackass back.

since RayGun's day they haven't given a shit about what the rules are, other than to:

  1. change them to their advantage and enfore them to their advantage,
  2. ignore the ones they can't change.

IF the military wasn't over stretched, we'd be there.

IF there is some kind of Tonkin Iran 'incident' tonight, sufficiently large to institute a draft with flags a waving, we'll be heading to Tehran tomorrow.

(of course, we might get some stern finger wagging from the i'm for i'm against patriot / torture act dishrag dems ... yawn )
