What is McDermott thinking?

Our very own "liberal" Representative Jim McDermott is advocating for a bi-lateral Free Trade Agreement with Malaysia.  Now I think that bi-lateral trade agreements can be very good (See: USA-Cambodia on Textiles, in which the United States provides economic incentives to Cambodia as they progressively expand their labor and environmental protections).

Perhaps we can use the same strategy to compel Malaysia to implement a minimum wage!  Because if we don't this is economic suicide.  Now we're going to be competing against a country that can legally pay their workers one cent an hour?  This is ridiculous, when does it stop?  Is Most-Favored-Nation status for Burma next?

"The [Malaysian] government will not adopt the minimum wage policy but instead allow market forces determine the salary level, Human Resources Minister Datuk Wira Dr Fong Chan Onn said today. Malaysia's free-market economy did not believe in minimum wage policy and the wage structure should be established by supply and demand, he added. 'That is the government's basic philosophy. The economy is much more flexible without minimum wage,' he told reporters."

The economy is much more flexible without minimum wage huh?  Cute.

Aaron Dixon for Congress, the 7th District

Honestly, if any of these Green party douches want to have any credibility, they should run candidates where the Republicans have either no chance of winning (the 7th), or where Republicans have no chance of losing (the 5th, I guess).

I like McDermott ok, but if we could send a strident Green in Congress who would vote left of the Dems, why not?  Think Bernie Saunders.

I don't know anything about Dixon, but I've long thought someone needed to take on McDermott.  I mean, he's had one of the safest seats in the country for god-knows-how-long, and what exactly has he done?  Is he a national voice for any progressive policy?  Has he gotten any big legislation passed (or started)? Does he have a position of leadership?  Is he doing anything with his position?

I agree with most of his positions, but frankly I expect more out of a Dem from the 7th.

(I do acknowledge his long-held position against the war.)

We can't allow McDermott, or any member of our state delegation, to vote for this abomination. I'm glad you posted this. I recommended it and I urge everyone elso to.

I had heard about this and immediately e-mailed Cantwell's and Adam Smith's staff, asking for Maria's and Adam's position on this. We got Adam to vote against CAFTA, and I am hopeful that for the same reasons, he would oppose this awful thing.

But McDermott? Call him. E-mail him, He can't be for this.

Jim is my congressman. I give him money every time I see him. We can't let him do this.

If perception is reality, then the world must be flat and the sun must revolve around it.

in his voting....McDermott voted for the Bahrain Free Trade Agreement in December.

Of course there are differences between Malaysia and Bahrain, but 81 other Democrats voted against the Bahrain FTA.
