Kauffman & Crawford face Mike Riley: Baby Reichert Bows Out

Darnit!  I thought we'd have the opportunity, here in the 47th Legislative District, to defeat two Reicherts this election season.

But, according to a King County Journal article by Jamie Smith,  Steve's just bowed out.  An unspecified old injury...

Maybe the two Democratic contenders scared him off.  He's unlikely to win on the merits.  And the usual dirty Republican tricks against these two particular candidates would backfire for sure.   Anything but respectful treatment of Claudia Kauffman, an accomplished and dignified candidate who has dedicated herself to serving the community, would look real bad. Scurrilous attacks on a woman of color never fly so well, anyway.  And attacking Chief Crawford, the tough, competent, caring cop seems like a pretty futile move.  These are both people with long public service records and deep roots in the community.  Ed Crawford's professional law enforcement credentials (let alone his educational and community service credentials) are distinctly more impressive than those of Mr. Reichert.

I don't know who the the new announced GOP candidate, Mike Riley, is.  Could he be the current Bellevue Superintendant of Schools?  [Added note: Nope, the Mike Riley who's running is a retired air traffic controller and a PTA guy.] That would make him one busy guy (though certainly a better strategic choice than Mr. Reichert.)  I can't tell, though.  It's a common name.  The WA Republican web page still lists Reichert.  I don't see a 47th LD Republican page.  (It used to be easy to pull up.  I wonder if it has been deleted...)  The King County Republican page still lists Reichert.  And the first 10 pages of Google on "Mike Riley" and Washington State don't turn up any other notable local Mike Rileys. So there will be an update to come.

...if it was that Mike Riley.

The man makes $180K or so a year running the Bellevue school district, and has what sometimes seems like unlimited drive and unlimited plans for how to improve it.  Love him or hate him (and believe me, I've seen a fair bit of each, and never casual in their intent), he is into his job.

Unless those that hate him knocked him out of his job and into this opportunity, I personally think it's as likely to be the Mike Riley who coaches football at Oregon State.

And besides, how do you sell a person who's made his career in Bellevue to folks in the 47th?

I didn't think of searching the public disclosure records.  Good one!
