DeLay-Associated Group Spends $200,000 to Moot Out WA Laws

Americans for Limited Government, a radical group from Illinois associated with Tom DeLay and Grover Norquist, has poured $200,000 into a Washington State Initiative.  I-933  proposes to moot out a substantial portion of Washington's environmental and zoning laws on private land.  These are laws and regulations that the citizens of Washington State have spent years negotiating into existence through our democratic process.

If I-933 passes, an almost certain result will be extensive, intensive, and punishing litigation from many directions and players.  Depending on the outcome of that litigation, we will likely see  a substantial increase in sprawling development across the state.  American Farmland Trust tells us that such sprawling development is losing us our best farmland in Washington.  It is unfortunate that, somehow, Washington State Farm Bureau (WSFB) has become the main in-state defender of this initiative.

Does WSFB represent the best interests of farmers in WA on this matter?  Let's hear from another organization representing farmers, Washington State Grange.  We learn from Washington's history encyclopedia, Historylink that, nationally, The Grange was "an important political force through much of rural America through the first half of the twentieth century and (was) responsible for a number of progressive agricultural and political reforms."  Nowadays, The Grange is sometimes associated more with conservatism than progressivism.   Throughout the decades and all the political and cultural shifts they bring, however, the Grange retains its authority as a champion of the interests of farmers. It is clear from a quote on I-933 from the May, 2006 Washington State Grange News that this organization is, at the least, expressing caution: "In an in-depth analysis of this language, the Grange found cause for concern to agricultural lands and some property owners."

I-933 is an initiative with a history.  Its registered sponsor is Dan Wood, WSFB's Director of Government Relations. Mr. Wood sponsored a very similar measure in 1996 that had the backing of mining, big-timber, oil, and big-developer interests.  The voters rejected that initiative.  So the right-wingers funded a successful effort to lobby legislators to pass the same thing through the legislature.  But the voters got the drift.  They  overturned this law with a referendum.  Now, 10 years later, Dan Wood, comes back again.  This time, funded with $200,000 by a politically motivated out-of-state radical organization that is simultaneously funding similar measures to overturn the laws of about 10 states nationwide.   The citations and references for this 'history' of I-933 are provided in a recent Washblog story, Radical Right Illinois Group = Single Largest I-933 Contributor.

You can read more about this and other initiatives in today's Northwest Progressive Institute's  piece, Right-Wing Initiatives Still a Threat.

I'm hoping we'll hear from willisreed on this topic; I believe he's got some knowledge of the issue.

I-933 is horrible public policy, which would have the effect of either allowing un-checked development or bankrupting local governments...  I guess we can guess which political party is behind it.

Anyways, there is a large coalition ramping up to oppose it, you can check out their website at:  http://www.protectcommunities.org/

They are also currently hiring field organizers in Vancouver, Seattle and Bellingham, to start immediately.  If anyone is interested in that post a comment and I'll pass on the application.

I see very little about this in mainstream press reports.  This initiative is more dangerous than any of the watch man's ever were and voters seem clueless thus far.

Interesting that WSFB and the Grange are on opposite sides of this one.  I wonder which is more attuned to the non-Seattle population of the state.

Great piece Noemie.

Does this group have any relation to ALRA? Chuck Cushman has surfaced in Clark County (where he lives) to pump up his coffers with the anti-casino contingent. I suspect his basic purpose is mobilizing his marginalia for the I-933...

Man-o-man, Clark County is a political wasteland.

One small act of protest you might consider, if you are a Country Companies insurance customer, is to remove your business from them.  You have to belong to the WSFB to buy Country Companies  insurance.  I was happy with my insurance but I changed it nonetheless, and sent letters to both Country Companies and WSFB.
