US Airforce: Let's Use Microwave Weapons on US Citizens for Crowd Control

[Hat tip to Paul Lehto]

To our left we see a "concept" image of a Vehicle Mounted Active Denial System, or V-MAD, pulled off an article on Global Security.org.  According to preliminary testing, the "directed energy" it transmits into its victims is safe, except for possibly damaging our eyes.  Of course, it's quite painful. And if we don't -- or can't -- move away within 250 seconds, it'll start to fry us.   And who knows what it will do to those have metal plates in our bodies. To our right is a picture of US Airforce Secretary Michael Wynne from an online CNN article entitled Air Force chief: Test weapons on testy U.S. mobs.  Wynne recommended this week that the U.S. military use microwave weapons on U.S. citizens for crowd control. [Added note 9/17: As close as I can tell, these weapons will be along the lines of V-MAD. It's difficult to know, as the press account out there doesn't include details.]

Right. "Testy US Mobs," ain't that cute. It makes those of us who see protesting against state-sponsored torture and illegal spying on citizens as our patriotic duty sound so quaint. Of course, these waves will likely be used on poor souls caught in disasters like Katrina, too. And we all know that these are likely to become more frequent since the Bush administration has been doing nothing about climate change for 6 precious years. Secretary Wynne tells us that using microwaves on US crowds first is a public relations move.  We don't want the US military to be "villified" in the foreign press, he says. Hmmm.  I guess he's not too worried about being villified in the U.S. press, then.

One might notice by looking at our local press that this has been absorbed with something close to silence by the traditional media. Kinda like when retiring Judge Sandra Day O'Connor announced to the public that we may be moving in the direction of a dictatorship in this country.... It didn't even lodge in our short-term memory, let alone falling down some deep memory hole. This is the kind of news that appears to fall as silently as snow.

This AP article appeared in the Seattle PI on the same day as it appeared on CNN -- under a slightly different title: Nonlethal weapons touted for use on U.S. citizens. The reporting moves on from this item, which should be a bombshell, in my opinion, quite quickly to "other news" without a peep about its meaning.

Is this a trial balloon? That's what I guess. What other reason does the administration have to announce it now? It makes sense that they'd want to see.. is it just a few crazy bloggers who'll pick up on this? Or will the newspapers and networks notice?

To the right of Mr. Wynne, in a political ad here on Washblog, we see Mr. Reichert, who's running for re-election.  I wonder what Mr. Reichert has to say about this? I wonder what Mike McGavick would say? I'm going to write them, and I bet they won't answer...

Dear Representative Reichert,

I just put a piece up on Washblog about how US Airforce Secretary Michael Wynne is proposing that our military use microwave weapons on US protesters for "crowd control" in order to avoid being villified by the foreign press for using them first on foreigners . I ask in this piece what people think your response to this would be.

I have come to understand your actions as tose of a person lending "rubber stamp" support to a corrupt administration. Will you support this? It would really help to hear your response in a timely way. You or your staff are also free to post a reply directly on Washblog.

Thanks,

Noemie Maxwell

...that the idea that we should be able to justify use of this weapon on our own people as well as in other countries. This is actually a pretty just statement. The same wisdom could be used to make international trade more just, or pesticide use, or other "externalities" that we force on other peoples but not ourselves.

HOWEVER, this is still a frightening weapon. We really shouldn't be using these on anyone. And to think that legitimate protest crowds could be the victims makes you want to stay away from the passions of democracy doesn't it?

Electromagnetic waves of energy to use on masses has been the dream of rulers for centuries. Nikola Tesla identified his "death ray" as the premier weapon of the future. He even began to build on in NYC. Even Archemedies used mirror arrays to channel the heat of the sun. What's most important in this news leak, IMO, is that we've developed these electromagnetic weapons. What else can we do when we explore the manipulation of electromagnetic fields of people or planets?

The effect CAN, alas, be overcome by a roll of tin foil (glued to a large hunk of cardboard), or by making a "poncho" from an emergency Space Blanket sold for backpacking... The first method can actually direct Microwave radiation back to the source. But that would be wrong, since they are simply there to "Protect and Serve"....
