J.P. Patches appearance draws crowd of real big kids in Fremont

A pair of multi-colored gentlemen with unusual fashion sense made a personal appearance at an event in their honor in Fremont, Center of the Universe.

I'm underprivileged--I grew up elsewhere than Seattle. So it was as cultural anthopologist that I observed this occasion.

As the two elderly clowns debarked their lemon-yellow roadster and slowly made their way up a ramp, one using a cane, excitement rippled through the middle-aged crowd.

My husband told me J. P. Patches wasn't JUST a TV clown! But you had to be there.

Photos & story below:

One year from today, a life-sized color statue will be dedicated to J.P. Patches on the 50th anniversary of the debut of his kids' show, which ran twice daily for 22 years. The model was unveiled by Mayor Nickels, County Councilmember Larry Phillips (above) and other notables. Someone said, "Look around! Everyone's smiling!"

Yes, it was a happy occasion.

The short children seemed unimpressed with J. P. and his sidekick "Gertrude", but the ones with gray hairs and love handles burbled with delight, jostling each other to get next to the pair for photos, videos, autographs and hugs. Many carried J.P. Patches pictures, coloring books, dolls, T-shirts, badges, and other memorabilia.

Caption contest? "My Dad is making a FOOL of himself, I hope my friends never see this picture."

This 51-year-old cub scout is my husband, standing next to J.P. for the first time in 45 years. The conversation went something like:
JP: Where ya been?
Cub Scout: I dunno, I thought you'd know where I been.
JP: I gotta talk to your parole officer.

Brian Johnston, who has written "J.P. Patches: Northwest Icon" introduced the semi-retired celebrities. J.P. modestly protested that the statue wasn't his idea and he felt a little funny promoting it.

Others pumped J.P.'s star status happily, though. Brian said many times at book signings people told him: "J.P. Patches saved my life." They grew up in an abusive household and the show was the one thing they could look forward to every day.

The TV show aired morning and evening weekdays and once on Saturday, he said, all those years, and they never used a script. "That's because we didn't know how to write," J.P. explained, "and Bob [Gertrude] didn't know how to read."

Greg Nickels related that after seeing the mountains and the J.P. Patches show, as a young'un newly arrived from Erie, Pennsylvania, "I knew I wasn't in Erie anymore."

"I hear you have tunnel vision," J.P. casually mentioned. The mayor looked startled and said: "I wasn't going to mention it, but...."

Don't let him bother you Mayor, I think you're all right!" squeaked Gertrude. "I didn't vote for you before, but I would the next time!!" Gertrude's falsetto came and went, probably a strain for a guy that age...

Brian said the Northwest chapter of the Academy of Television Arts paid for a lot of the statue, plus contributions from locals. Tully's is donating 20% of its profits on "J.P. Patches Day".

I remarked on J.P.'s deadpan delivery. If not for the clownish getup, he could be anyone's grampa with a droll sense of humor. My husband said he had always been like that.

Anyone here have a J.P. Patches story?

Dina,

I grew up with JP Patches but never got to meet him in person until I was a grown man with my own grandchild (with me in this photo). This photo was taken at a street fair in Bellvue an a day when I was out campaigning for Heidi Behrens-Benedict.

Those that know JP will remember the "ICU2 TV Set" through which he would acknowledge birthdays and other special events in children's lives. I was both thrilled and dissapointed that JP and I shared a birthday. Because of this, JP never acknowledged my birthday "on air" as April 1st was "All about JP." We had a good laugh about that at this meeting.

I wish I had known about the event in Freemont but you can be sure I will be following the progress of the forthcoming statue and will make every effort to be there for the unveiling. Your husband is absolutely correct. JP should never be thought of as JUST a TV clown.

I love me some JP!  But my husband is an even bigger fan.  His life was made complete a couple years ago when JP came to the Grays Harbor County Fair.  Not only did he get to meet him, but he got to go onstage and be part of the act.  My husband's one of the Grays Harbor County commissioners.  JP had a field day with him.  He had him lose Simon Says on purpose...giving the win to the youngest kid in the game...and then made a lot of jokes about how politicians can't follow rules.  Hysterical!

Here he is, on stage getting set up to take the dive.

He loves this photo so much, he's got it framed in his office.

There are few celebrities in the Northwest who deserve a statue more than JP does.  He was a wonderful gift to all of us kiddies who grew up with him.   The kids of today have no clue, do they?

I grew up watching JP Patches and Gertrude.

I met JP when my buddies Blythe and Pat had JP christen their sail boat. Named "Patches Pal", of course.

JP's great fun. He teases people in a way that makes them feel loved. At the party, one lady said "Oh, I never got to be on your show." JP replied "We didn't let the naughty children on."

I have a great photo of my son and I with JP.

I've heard that Gertrude has MS. So doesn't get around much any more.

I don't have a TV any more, so don't know. But I think JP and Gertrude still help with fundraising for KCTS 9.
