Progressives Running Against Senate Bill = Win-Win?

I asked myself: "What if Progressives ran against the healthcare bill the way they did against the Iraq War? What's the worst that could happen?"

After all, for supporters of the bill, Howard Dean's soundly-reasoned public objection to the Senate bill (soon America's bill) seems to have been important in getting it over the top. For people who want real healthcare reform, a message of opposition helps us stay invigorated and hopeful in the face of the "The Quiet Coup.

Lately, we've heard a reinvigorated cry from the "My Democratic Party, Right or Wrong" set in the MSM and here on Washblog telling Progressives to shut up and take it. But we all know the party is split, so why pretend otherwise? Why not use the split in the party to allow both sides to reach out to "independents" and may the better argument win?

It's all about the 20% in the middle here.

Democrat big-wigs calculate that the 13% who are opposed to the bill because it doesn't go far enough have nothing in common with the 20% in the "middle" who have nothing in common with the 35% who oppose. They figure the existence of a program - any program, really - will neutralize the 13%, sway the swayable 20% and even take some some of the 35% who will realize that their Medicare is not going to be taken away.

Where the polls see 3%, Dem leadership sees a bright future. They figure that their natural constituency is among people who were worried that the government would "go too far" but will ultimately support this approach - the least-persuasive argument out there. Dem leadership sees their political future among the nation's ardent supporters of Medicare Part D.

Okay. Fair enough. Whatever the numbers, it's a legitimate argument and it has its adherents. Many in the media will, of course, report that the Congress "passed healthcare" and go on to more important news about sports and entertainment. They might even get David Brooks to once more compliment them for being "Burkean".

I like the chances of Progressives linking with popular discontent a lot better.

Mandates will be really unpopular when people realize that the mandate is to buy shitty barely more than catastrophic insurance from murderers by spreadsheet.  Claims will still be denied at the whims of people who pay their employees bonuses to deny actual care.  There are no real cost controls.

To the strains of Beethoven, a hung and sinewey Sean Connory proclaims: "The Penis is bad; the Gun is good." or something.

The protagonist jumps on the flying head and ultimately makes it back to the Vortex, where nobody gives a crap.

When he made up these "childrens' stories" did he have a clue?

Whose web site? What? Where? What did I do?
