doomsday scenario

Here's my "bad political novel" view on how this plays out, assuming that Tester and Webb both win their seats:

Rumsfeld leaves as SecDef
Before the Senate convenes in January, Bush appoints Joe Lieberman to replace him
Connecticut governor Jodi Rell appoints a Reublican to replace Lieberman
With Senate now 50-50, Republicans broker deal to hold vital committee chairs
In 50-50 legislative votes, VP Cheney can break ties

A few notes on this... Step 1 already accomplished. Step 2 allows Joe to crow that he didn't "go back on his word" and caucus with GOP. In Step 3, Bush says it's a recess-appointment, so Joe serves as SecDef even if the Senate balks, fails to invoke filibuster, refuses to "vote up or down".
