Why do conservatives grasp this but progressives can't?

Almost embarassed to have posted three diaries in a row, but come on folks, post stuff!  Anyways, as those who were on the seattlekos mailing list know, I'm not one of those who think we need to support Maria CantSellUsOutFastEnough.  Others took the attitude that we can't afford to lose her in the General.  Funny, I don't recall saying we SHOULD.  It's the PRIMARIES where we need to toss her out in favor of a true progressive candidate.  Why is this so hard to grasp?  It seems the conservatives understand this simple concept, as I just read in todays headlines.  According to Travis Baker in todays Kitsap Sun....

Republican challenger Jack Hamilton won a resounding victory over incoumbent Kitsap County Commissioner Patty Lent...Delegates from the thrid commissioner district that Lent represents reportedly voted 48 to 7 in favor of Hamilton.

It goes on to say that Lent has come under attack for her vote on the Critical Areas Ordinance and other land use measures.

Maria Cantwell isn't just out of line when it comes to the war in Iraq.  She's voted for Corporate interests and against progressive liberal interests on several key issues.  Issues like bankruptcy, CAFTA, and most recently, the renewal of the Patriot Act.

If even the Republicraps can understand something as basic as the purpose of holding a Primary and supporting candidates that support your core values, why the hell are we being such cowards and refusing to hold Maria CantSellUsOutFastEnough accountable?

Who's your primary candidate, then? Mark Wilson? Aaron Dixon? The Flying Spaghetti Monster?

We might agree on some of Maria's positions, but what's to be done about it now, at this stage of the election cycle?

Nothing. End of discussion. Too bad if you don't like that. Re-elect her and let's work together to find a better candidate for 2012. Reality sucks sometimes, but there's nothing "progressive" about the politics of self-delusion and self-indulgence.

I operate in the real world, where we do not have a majority in the Senate. We do not have the luxury of undermining an incumbent Democrat.

In the 1960s I could vote "my conscience" against Scoop Jackson with impunity, because he wasn't going to lose and because the Democrats held the majority in the Senate. Can anyone tell me with a straight face that this situation is no different?

I'm tired of this crap. Don't vote for her if you don't like her. We will re-elect her with you or without you. Go work for some other candidate, then, and please do not denigrate or undermine the efforts of other, equally passionate, equally dedicated Democrats whose interests do not happen, for now, to coincide with yours.

We are not a monolithic party and whereas we might disagree now, we might be working together on some other issue or for some other candidate later, when our interests do coincide, and when you will be grateful for our help. So please stop calling people "cowards." Just who the hell do you expect to respond favorably to that?

If perception is reality, then the world must be flat and the sun must revolve around it.

As hard as it is to believe for many of her opponents, Maria does support my core values.  Do I agree with her vote on everything?  No.  But overwhelmingly, we're aligned.  I don't particularly like her, but I disagree with those who say she's somehow not aligned with Democrats.  As Ivan said, I don't think that makes me a coward.

Pen, I think you miss the fundamental argument about protecting her during the general election - that argument presupposes

A:  Mark won't beat her, but with a lightning strike could make her spend money and time better spent on McGavick

B:  If Mark did beat her, he'd get his ass handed to him by McGavick.

Not everyone agrees on those two points.  You, clearly, disagree, I know Chad does, as do several others here.  Unlike some, I don't think that makes you a fool, I think it just makes us disagree.  Bottom line, that's the thinking that goes into the argument against even supporting a primary opponent against her.   It's not that complicated.

I'm with Ivan, let's stop with the "you're stupid"/"you're a coward" rhetoric and just support who we support.

  • This primary by gibney, 04/24/2006 10:53:43 PM PST (none / 0)
Two points that make this particular simile utterly irrelevant to Maria's situation in the primary:

  • This is a local race, being contested over local issues.

  • Mr. Hamilton is a well-known, well-regarded, entity for Kitsap County Republicans.  He has previously run in, and won, an election for Freeholder in the self-same district of Kitsap County.  He's currently the president of Kitsap's United Way and serves on both the Central Kitsap Community Council and Silverdale's Citizen Advisory Committee for planning.

The difference between this contest and Cantwell's are so obvious that they're not worth the time and effort to discuss.

People who try to debate, but aren't willing to do it without calling names.

CantSellUsOutFastEnough?
Repugs?
RayGun?

Grow up.  How do you expect anyone to take your arguments seriously when you insist on using dumb nicknames?  Debate on the issues and leave the namecalling for the kids on the playground.

blah blah blah

I trust you agree that even responding to this ongoing ploy masked as a debate is growing old. Even the posters of the pro Wilson stuff can do the math and see that even if he were handed a cool million or two, he would have no chance of getting out of the teens in the primary. In fact every cent would be better spent as a gift to those families who have suffered loss in Iraq or come home with physical or other injuries.

I do thank you though for responding to the repeated posts of the few so that the many readers continue to see enough reality so they can draw an informed conclusion about what is at stake and what our role is here in Washington. We must get our hands back on the wheel in DC.
Well I am going to cut my lawn. Peace.
