West Seattle Neighbors' 9-11 Antiwar newspaper ad

ON 9-11-07, the Robinson newspapers (West Seattle Herald, etc) will display this half-page ad,
paid for by West Seattle Neigbors for Peace and Justice, designed by moi. They will all send this page to congressmembers.

Comtinued below:

I wanted to convey dignity, strength,  gravity, and balance. So I used three weights of Bookman, for both text and headlines. It's a classic font with wide letterforms and slab serifs (chunky serifs, rather than delicately curved). This font is neither TOO friendly-looking, like Clarendon (on the green Washclean.org sign at right), or TOO in-your-face, like Enschede Black, overwheming the text. (I feel it should be a felony to use Times Roman font for anything except newspaper articles.)

The rows of tiny type at the bottom are in Myriad, a modern sans serif, highly legible even at 7- or 8-point size.

The photos have been stylized to emphasize their symbolism: converted to grayscale, posterized, cropped to oval shape with a fade edge, then posterized again. They have been separated with indvidual, very bold captions to emphasize the two separate, yet equally important, messages.

A frame on the "Letter to Congress" portion of the text separates it from the list of signatures below. White space around that letter area sets it off as an important message.

Below is the original ad they proposed before I rudely vetoed that and designed the above version.

There were supposed to be two images underneath the rows of print on the lower half of the ad -
coffins and a polar bear on melting ice - but no one could make them out.

GRAPHIC DESIGN DOES MATTER.

My next challenge is to design such an ad addressed to Congress, if it were paid for by seabos. That requires a different "tone" of visual and verbal message. Probably will include the word "fascist". Stay tuned.

I really appreciate the ad being placed.  And I appreciate the graphics lesson.  This is the kind of information that really comes in handy.  Thanks.

It's interesting that a stylized image accompanying a word -- like war or warming -- can convey an idea so much more immediately and efficiently than the word alone.

The title "To our Senators..." etc. is so much more clear on the matter of their responsibilities to us as our elected representatives than "A plea..."

Seriously, penguins aren't nearly as threatened by warming. THere are pengiuns that don't live in the frozen south.
WHen the ice is no more in the North, so will be the polar bear.

Was the ad placed and what was the reaction?
