McCain Tries To Lay Green Eggs In Oregon

From today's Washington Post:

McCain Breaks With Bush on Climate Policy

PORTLAND, Ore., May 12 -- Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) made a sharp break with President Bush on Monday, saying that the United States should adopt mandatory curbs on greenhouse gas emissions as well as issue tradable emissions credits to polluters to spur technological innovation.

"The facts of global warming demand our urgent attention, especially in Washington," he said, speaking at a Portland training facility for Vestas Wind Technology. "We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great. The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge.

As I shared some time ago in my own, rambling way: Yes, actually, the Republicans DO think they can get away with using global warming as their issue.

Well, what are they going to run on, their party's record?

And YOU let this happen. Just kidding, it wasn't you, but you do need to warn your friends who say that global warming is the ONLY issue and NOTHING else is important if the earth warms up and so on and so forth that they have to wise up.

"Yes," you can tell them, "it is going to be the future soon but you have to calm down." Because it's the present now and we have to make our argument in today's context. If we don't, the Republicans will. We cannot state our hysterical absolutes and hope our passion and, well, hysteria, will persuade.

We have, Comrades, to be ready to mock.

I heard Ariana Huffington the other night trotting out this old line that the problem with the national political debate is that the dirty old media insists on always putting on TWO sides of every issue - the charlatans.

This was terrible, she explained, because it gave people without much sensible worth saying space to say it. And if we only stopped this practice.....

Um, no.

When the other side comes out with a lame argument, that is what is known as an "opportunity to kick some ass." It is not the media which validates invalid positions, but liberals. We have to learn to mock, deride and discredit. We owe it to the country.

Liberals don't need Camp Wellstone, we need Camp Daily Show, Camp Al Franken, Camp Lewis Black or perhaps even a Camp Dick Cavett for the more effete.

When the presidential candidate from the party that has been the chief administrator, head technology officer and human resources director for the Big Lie on climate change tries to use global warming as HIS issue, you don't scream, you laugh. And you encourage others to laugh with you.

Failing that, you just say snarky things.

"Senator McCain, when did the nuclear power industry tell you what your position on global warming was?"

"Sentor McCain, are you saying that the heads of the oil companies who now tell us they are the future of clean energy, the heads of the coal companies who now tell us they are the future of clean energy and the heads of the tobacco companies who tell us they lead the nation in educating teens on the dangers of smoking are lying?"

or maybe just:

"Senator McCain, as the Republican party's nominee for President, you say you want to lead the effort to fight global warming. I don't get the joke."

Can anybody translate this phrase into Italian:

Berlusconi: it's Italian for "Bush" - or something similar.

Thanks.
