A bad taste in my mouth. . .

I endured the 46th LD's "nominating convention" last night, and I came away feeling like our local group is being factionalized, much as the national party is. It didn't need to happen. And it's the fault of the State Party.

I guess I understand the panic about the "Top 2" primary, but forcing all the LDs to scramble into "nominating" ONE candidate per position, prior even to the filing date? We can do better than this, I'm sure.

The 46th is a massively Democratic district, and as long as we don't field more than a few candidates, it is certain that the result of the Top 2 is that we will have one, and quite possibly both slots going into the General.

In fact, applying game theory, as the party with more than 50% of the voters in the district, we should field two candidates, rather than one, with an eye to shutting other parties out of the General Election. On the other hand, yes, we're best served to field no more than two. But, given that situation, the State Party could have given leeway for districts to "nominate" up to two candidates, where Democratic voters are in the majority? That would have taken some of the hostility out of last night's proceedings, certainly. And it would allow our District's voters at least some choice in the matter.

As it is, I see the basically-even split that came out of the 46th's "nominating convention" to be a rejection of the State Party's attempt to short-circuit the primary process (and props to Javier for voting against all this at the State's Executive Board). As far as I can tell, the 46th intends to go forward with our standard endorsement process, etc., without further wrangling, or interference from on high. . . I hope.

But this sure hasn't been pleasant so far.

Poll

Given Top 2, the State Party should:
Let the LDs figure this out themselves.
Insist on either one or two nominees, based on LD party performance.
Insist on a single nominee per position, regardless.
Go in a back room with cigars, and tell us the results later.

The 36th has refused to schedule a Nominating Convention, for much the same reasons you state in your diary.  It's my understanding that Dwight will simply "anoint" one of their pair of candidates as the officially-endorsed candidate, which will surely not bode well for intra-party relations.

Boy, am I glad that our six-way race in the 43rd took place prior to the ridiculous SCOTUS opinion.  What a fubar that would have been.

Here's a way for the LD organization to thumb its nose at the idiotic process -- endorse someone who isn't running, has no intention of running, won't file for the position.  After all, this "convention" takes place before anyone is a legally-declared candidate (forming a committee and raising money doesn't imply filing for the office, and vice versa).
