There's an election on Thursday, and I bet you weren't invited!

[Front paged: NM
Update: 3/21/09: Results should be available by Wed. 3/25. Update 3/25. The anti-CAO candidate, Preseton Drew (who was on the ballot) won with 1357 votes. Mark Sollitto, the environmentalist who was not on the ballot, got 1199 votes. If he had been on the ballot, he almost certainly would have won. Link]

There is a very obscure yet very important election occurring in King County this Thursday, March 19.

It is for a position on the King Conservation District Board of Supervisors, which is comprised of five members. (Why this is called the King Conservation District, and not the King County Conservation District, is unknown to me.)

Why you should care about this election

  • King Conservation District (KCD) is a natural resources assistance agency authorized by Washington State and guided by the Washington State Conservation Commission. Its mission is to promote the sustainable use of natural resources through responsible stewardship. A five-member Board of Supervisors is responsible for all District programs and activities. Since 1949, the KCD has been helping the people of King County manage their natural resources.
  • The KCD Board is dominated by a right-wing stranglehold, including the recently-appointed David Irons.
  • This is a low-profile election with very low turnout, and as a result, Republicans/conservatives are often elected. Hence, Democrats and progressives need to vote.

Why you should vote for Mark Sollitto (write-in candidate)
  • Mark Sollitto is endorsed by King County Councilmember Dow Constantine, King County Councilmember Larry Phillips, and King County Conservation Voters.
  • GOP/Conservatives support Preston Drew, who opposes King County's Critical Areas Ordinance, which is designed to protect streams, wildlife, and wetlands.
  • You can bet your bottom dollar that the right-wing property-rights wackos from places like Fall City are very well organized to support and get out the vote for Preston Drew. We must defeat them.
  • See Mark Sollitto's website for information about why he's running and why he's the best person for the job.

How to vote for Mark Sollitto (write-in candidate)
  • THIS IS A WRITE-IN CANDIDACY! Unfortunately, Mark Sollitto is running as a write-in candidate because he "neglected to turn in a 1/2 page form (2A) with the 50 signatures from registered voters." (from his website) So, before you go vote, write his name down on a piece of paper and take it with you. Spell it correctly on your ballot. Don't give anyone an excuse to invalidate your write-in vote!
  • Any eligible voter can vote at any of the thirteen polling locations (it doesn't have to be the location closest to your registered address).
  • ID, such as your driver license or voter registration card, is required.

They're nothing more than government seeking a favorable venue.

It's behavior with exactly the same motivations as crooked elections in the third world.
