Washington for John Edwards Blog LAUNCH

I'm pleased to announce the launch of my new blog, WA for Edwards.

It's the official start of the 2008 campaign for the Democratic nomination, so I fee like it's as good a time as any to be official about who I'm supporting, and why.

We've already seen some Democratic candidates announce their intentions - Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, Former Virginia Governor Mark Warner, and most recently, Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold.  Vilsack has an exploratory committee, and Warner and Feingold are taking a pass on '08.

Edwards himself hasn't announced anything, but his wife Elizabeth is sure he's going to run:

Speaking at a luncheon sponsored by the Ladies Home Journal, Edwards said she didn't know the New York senator very well but expects [Senator Hillary] Clinton will be "a formidable opponent" for her husband, the Democrats' 2004 vice presidential nominee.

Here's a bit from the first post about the things I want in a Democrat in '08:

I want my candidate to be an outspoken, unapologetic economic populist.

I want someone who can reach out, in a big way, to the conservative `values voters.'

I want my candidate to have a natural ability getting his/her message out to regular folks. No more non-human candidates (Gore) or too-smart-for-his-own-good candidates (Kerry).

I want a candidate who can close the deal in Missouri and Arkansas, as well as Colorado and Arizona.

I want a candidate who has spent at least as much of his life outside of politics as he spent inside of it.

Above all, I want a positive, affirmative campaign that extols the things Democrats are for, instead of just against.

I was chatting with Washblog's own rmdSeaBos at last night's SeattleKos event, and I mentioned John Edwards' National Press Club speech and his plan to fight poverty in America.  These are worth taking a look at.

Thanks for you interest!

-Will

"No more non-human candidates (Gore) or too-smart-for-his-own-good candidates (Kerry)." Were these attacks two years out from the primary/caucus season really neccessary to elevate your candidate?

As one who fully believes that Gore was elected in 2000, I am curious if you would still hold him in such contempt had we been living in a "Gore America" where the wealthy were not awarded huge tax cuts at the expense of the rest of us and the oil and gas companies were not writing energy policy? Would you still think him "non-human" if, after the attacks of 9-11 (if indeed they would have happened given that Gore would have undoubtedly followed the advice of Richard Clarke and others in the intelligence community) he would have stayed focussed on those that attacked us and not have launched an unprovoked invasion of Iraq?

I have nothing in particular against Edwards (although his authorship of the Patriot Act does not speak well to his efforts in protecting our civil liberties) but I think I will try to concentrate on the 2007 races up here in Everett and Snohomish County before I get too entrenched in 08 politics.

I can support Edwards more than most, but I'd also like to wait just a little more before getting into 2008.
We have a lame duck Congress, a new COngress, and the next Legislative session(s) to chatter about first.

"No more non-human candidates (Gore)"

Have you seen "An Inconvenient Truth" or heard any of his speeches over the last 6 years? Granted, I wish he'd talked like that when he was running, but to call him non-human is completely uncalled for.

I'm not sure I want Edwards to be the nominee, but if Gore declared, he'd be my first choice in a heartbeat. And he won Florida. The evidence, once it could no longer do any good, was clear.

It's BARAK TIME BAY-BEE, and Edwards doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell against the awesomeness that is BARAK OBAMA!

On that note, if Obama doesn't throw his hat in the race, I might be inclined to back Edwards - but only if he's removed that damned mole on his lip (that's why he lost you know - that mole was too much of a distraction).

I'm with Obama

I think Gore has learned a thing or three about letting himself be "handled."  Whenever I see video clips of him these days, I always think "Who are you and what did you do with that guy who ran for president in 2000?"

  • Oh ouch by Belltowner, 11/13/2006 12:00:19 PM PST (5.00 / 3)

His reflex on the Patriot Act was all wrong.

On a sort of "inside baseball" note, I think Edwards had a better team and was a smarter campaigner than the post-Iowa John Kerry (in Iowa, the Kerry campaign was brilliant, but that was not the same campaign as the national). I think Edwards made a very good choice to allow himself to be marginalized by the Kerry campaign and stick to his message.

The problem with Edwards (and probably his appeal to Belltowner) is that people who support him often come from an attitude of placating the Right. You can't placate the Right. You can appeal to more conservative voters, but that is a matter of being diplomatic and finding issues on which you have common ground. The idea of placating Movement Conservatives is poison and Edwards has tried that in the past.
