Thanks emmetto for a really great synopsis of the synopiiiiiii (I didn't take latin).

Each writer has points I enjoyed, I thought about, I disagreed with -

without analysis, we are just gonna keep going to keep spinning round and round on the Carvillian Potemkin puke machine.

Any notion that Darcy Burner could have or should have been able to close this deal on her own was idiotic. A novice does not run successfully against an incumbent with 30 years of public service in his constituency without something to give her a boost over the top. Had Ms. Burner been able to spend 5 or 6 million of her own money, that might have done it, but what really had to happen was for the party to get unified behind a Burner message of a citizen-candidacy.

Carol Shea-Porter in the New Hamshire 1st district. Used that message to good effect. But if Burner could not claim to be a Cinderella-story candidate, she needed backing from the party figures - most importantly the top of the ticket.

The superfical similarities between Burner and Cantwell could have been the glue that held a great story together. Burner could have run as Cantwell Jr. and that would have worked.

She couldn't because of the appalling misjudgment of Cantwell and her supporters in gauging the Iraq issue and how much the electorate was upset. Rather than helping Burner ride the blue tide in the 8th, Cantwell put the brakes on. Burner's campaign was always going to have to be a negative anti-Bush message. She simply could not compete on credentials and it was ridiculous to expect her to do so. Once you're committed to a negative message, you have to go all the way and get support. Burner didn't get enough support and thus the Seattle Times felt comfortable undoing her candidacy with their nonsense.

Once Cantwell knew she would win - and she certainly should have - she should have committed resources and, most importantly, message to the Burner campaign. In politics one cannot expect support as a matter of course, but Maria Cantwell has showed that she is not a team player and Washington politicians should not expect anything from her but for her to raise money to forward her own ambitions.
