Environmental and Social Priorities for WA: Lobby Days and Forums

I received an email today, passed along by a Washblog reader, and prepared by the University of Washington's Policy Watch program of the Center for Civic Engagement.  It lists the lobby days in Olympia for a number of Washington State groups.  Pretty amazing what's going on in our state.

Looking at this list, reproduced below the fold, I have two reactions.  First, I'm struck by the energy and diversity represented here.   Second, having my eyes cross a bit at this long list, I think what a smart move it was for Washington Environmental Council and other organizations to have led on the creation of the Priorities for a Healthy Washington coalition.  This coalition identifies the environmental community's overall legislative strategy for each session and plans accordingly -- including working with key stakeholders from all interest groups to fashion the most effective legislation possible.  It's resulted in a much higher passage level for high-priority environmental laws in Washington.  Their community forums, in which legislators from both parties appear in panels to give their initial take on the high-priority environmental legislation, are extremely worthwhile.

Another very successful legislative initiative is the King County Democrats Legislative Action Days, which brings community members and legislators together, usually at community libraries, to discuss upcoming legislation. The King County Democrats Calendar announces these events.  Probably other Democratic organizations have this going on, as well.

I don't see it listed, but it is a great day that those of us who can make it down to Olympia should participate in. Lynn from Evergreen Politics and I went to last session's lobby day together and had a great time of it, meeting many legislators one-on-one and activists, drinking some beer at the end of it all.

There are plenty of other worthy lobby days to attend, and from personal experience I would say that the face time you get with your representatives in Olympia is well worth it to make the trip. Unless you are Emmett, then its probably a short bike ride.

I've posted this to Activism.Wikia.com.  And I'm asking for help to post these events to the PDCW Google Calendar.

Every time I get one of these lists, the first thing that I think about is how to make it available to more people, and how to increase the ability of people to add more.

And invariably, all my efforts ever do is to get more people to send me more information to post without help.

We're a community of activists.  Let's work together and have everyone pull some of the load.  That applies to lobbying as much as collecting information.
