Washington State Counties: Where do Democrats Stand?

[Front paged NM. Important new resource]

Well, that was a frustrating project!  Do you know that there is at this point no single location with information about who our County Councilmembers are, what party they are from, and when they are up for reelection?

There still isn't, but I'm working on it.  Here's the current map:

County Status, 2006

More below the fold...

You would think that the Washington Association of Counties would list all of the County Councilmembers.  No.  At least not on all of them.  And the National Association of Counties does not list party affiliation, nor have they updated their list since the 2006 elections.  (Only King County and Snohomish County have County elections in the Odd years.  Everyone else has elections alongside the Legislative elections.)

So I had to do a search for election results, and not even that is consistent.  For several counties, I had to search for individual names and base my determination on whether they were members of the local Democratic Party, or at least mentioned favorably on some of our local Dem websites.  Some county auditors, and entire counties, don't even have websites, meaning the results are based on newspapers and the Secretary of State's office.  VoteWashington.org is another good source of information and links, hosted by Hewitt Consulting, based in Centralia.

But we're at least up to date on who has the majority.  I'm still finishing up my collection of names and parties on some of the individual county pages.  I'll continue to work on this, alongside the other infrastructure inventory project that I mentioned.

Chad - thanks for the great resource.  It is a Christmas present of another kind for sure, but welcome indeed.

If you go to this page on Left.Wikia, you can click on any of the county names in the list and find the names of each of the county councilmembers (or commissioners), including Party affiliation.

I'm going to make the assumption that all of these elections are held every 4 years, so the next step is to collect them all into an Excel sheet and collect the dates when they will be up for reelection, and what the last election results were.  I'll post those results on either DFW or PDCW.

Another thing about these county pages.  I'm going to copy over the information from DFW, as far as county party links and whatever other information I can find.  If you want to help, please feel free!

is I think some counties elect them at large while most elect by district. And it's not always clear which way each county acts from their webpage.

Tim Sheldon, though elected as a D in the state senate is an Independent on the county council. I changed it at Wikia.

So, Asotin County doesn't have the results posted on their website, and the Secretary of State's website has been down.  I asked the Auditor, Elaine Johnston, if she had a set of results on Excel that she could send me.

She sent me the entire 2006 canvass report in .csv format.  184K.  Help!  I think this breaks things down all the way to Precinct, but I'm not sure yet.  I'm going to try and break this down into a readable format, and anyone who wants to help me is welcome!!!
