Respect is a two way street

One of the lessons that the LaRouche kids have never learned, and don't seem to be able to learn, is how to show respect.  It's gotten to the point quite often where they sound reasonable when talking about issues and organizing, but then blurt out their views at the wrong time and/or in the wrong way, and we (meaning either myself or the party in general) wants nothing more than to see them go away.  Forever.

Case in point.

I attended the Howard Dean event Tuesday evening, and before the Governor came out from the higher priced private event to give his speech, I got into a conversation with someone who really sounded reasonable.  She knew the facts of what was going on in Washington DC, and she knew the issues.  If anyone has ever heard me speak about my frustration on how low our organizational skills are, you've heard the rant that I gave to this girl.  Then she said that she was a LaRouche organizer.  I recounted my experience in May, 2003, and she said that they had stopped doing stuff like that.  I told her I didn't think so, because at the May, 2007 meeting of the 46th, they were there with their chorus and signs calling V.Pres Al Gore a liar about Climate Change, and they were at a recent King County Democrats meeting doing the same thing to the point that the Carpenters actually called the police.  I keep hoping, though, and I told her so.

Then, about half way through Gov. Dean's speech, one of the kids spoke up and asked about Impeachment.  He answered her, and addressed her question in order to move on.  About 10 minutes later, another one spoke up with some point that I don't even remember, because I immediately saw red.  After the Gov. was unable to get her to wait until the end of his speech, there was a ROAR from the back of the room with one word.  "WAIT"  Meaning wait until the speech was done.  She went quiet, as did the entire room for a second, so Dean continued.  She spoke up again, and there was another roar.  She finally shut the heck up and let him finish.

I don't know what happened when he finally got around to her, but I can tell you one thing.  Any time those idiot kids try to interrupt other activists who are actually trying to get something done, someone better put their foot down and stop them.  At least the only thing I did was shout.

Yeah, that was me in the back of the room, seeing red and holding myself back.

Respect is a two way street, kids.  You will get as much as you show to others.

Were you the one yelling "WAIT!"?

As you say, that young woman continued to interrupt Dean after he promised to hear her, right after his speech was finished. I didn't hear what was said later, but she gave a big dramatic SIGH as she handed him a flyer.

I am pro-impeachment myself and would've been interested to address that topic, but I'm also anti-disrespect for those who deserve respect.

I was told Jim McDermott got a similar treatment from LaRouchies at a recent event.

I was at the Gore Town Hall you mention where 4 or 5 stood up and began singing a Gregorian-chantlike piece in the middle of his talk (and were quickly escorted out, but I could hear the choir outside for quite awhile). "Those are the LaRouche cult," Gore said ruefully. "For some reason they've taken a liking to me..." From this remark, I figured he encounters this regularly in his travels across the country.

Do these LaRouchies only dis Democratic activists, or do they confront Republicans? That wuld be interesting to find out.

They're so sure they're right that nothing else matters.  It's like fundamentalist Christianity.

I see this in some people who are not in cultlike movements.  They start from good evidence and intentions.  Then they follow one line of logic through, without deviation, to its end (at times to truth but, just as easily, to absurdity) -- forgetting to look at the whole context or to have compassion for others.

because here's a small but vocal group of truly dedicated activists that could be accomplishing so much - but they act like a cult and are successful only at isolating themselves.

The biggest problem is if you say "Thanks, but not interested" they don't leave you alone.  Instead they keep interrupting you and saying why you have to LISTEN RIGHT NOW.  The closest similarity in my lifetime was the co-worker who tried to convert everyone to his religion at every slow moment in the day.

Most LaRouchies need to understand the patience and give and take that comes with being an activist.  If you can't get someone to shut up or leave you alone once you're talking, why start the conversation in the first place?

Chad is right - the tactics of most LaRouchies (I've met an occaisional exception to the rule) turn people off, even if they might support some of their views.

It does seem like they wage a constant low-level campaign at the 46th - trying to get into the Exec. Board, etc.

Why on Earth do they think they're "Democrats"? I wish there was some legal way to stop LaRouche from advertising himself as a "Democratic Candidate for President", which I've seen on all the literature I've had forced on me.

If there was some way of siccing them on the Republicans, I'd be all for it, but they've made themselves our problem.

My only hope is that - eventually - LaRouche will have to retire (not that I'm wishing ill-health on him) and since it's a pure cult of personality, the whole business should fold up shop once he's not actively turning out new, crazy, half-baked conspiracy theories.

Pictures from the Dean event
I saw two candidates there: Darcy Burner and Bill Sherman...plus our friends N in Seattle, Daniel K, Lynn Allen, Howie in Seattle, Kelly Bevins, & Sara Needleman, who was such a big go-getter in the Dean for America.

I asked H.D. if he remembered me and he smiled, "How could I NOT, with you wearing that getup?"
