"The House has approved a bill that requires all people voting in federal elections to show a photo ID in 2008 and proof of citizenship by 2010. Supporters say it's the only way to fight election fraud. Opponents say the bill would put hurdles in the way of some voters."
According to NPR, the vote was along Republican party lines. Apparently the logic is that by forcing people to show they are legally able to vote in this country. But the hurdles are not just for someone who is an illegal alien, but they said it would be for the elderly and possibly the poor. Noone has had to show proof of identity not even in border states yet now republicans infer that somehow the federal electoral process is in peril if noone shows proof. I think the republicans are really scared since the people targeted can swing the vote in favor of the democrats, and if they can prevent this population, who usually vote democrat, then they can keep the white house red.
NOw to the impact here for this election. Since this was a vote along party lines, then we can assume that Reichert did vote for this. I highly doubt that this is representing his districts values.
