Domke workshop on framing the health care message
A special one day workshop for leaders in health care reform
How to Use Language that Connects with Americans on Health Care Reform Turning values into powerful political messages Sponsored by the Washington Health Security Coalition
When: Saturday, June 30, 2007
Where: Lake City Presbyterian Church Facilitators: Dr. David Domke and Dr. Crispin Thurlow, Dept. of Communication, University of Washington
Health care reform advocates have often failed to speak with a language that connects with everyday Americans. As a result, opponents who are more skilled in crafting powerful messages have defined the issues and won the debate.
Many Americans don't have the interest or time to sift through the endless array of issues and competing agendas in today's political culture. As a result, people look for ways to simplify their intake and evaluation of information. It is commonplace among citizens is to rely upon `cues' that can be confidently used to guide decisions. The most politically potent cues are often core values and beliefs that can unite Americans and inspire them. Health care reform advocates must become more effective in identifying and communicating our core values in ways that resonate with our audience both morally and culturally. Our facilitators are experts in articulation: the purposeful use of language to create clear connections between guiding principles and social priorities. This workshop combines our facilitators' scholarly expertise with concrete, realistic, and applied understandings of contemporary politics and media. Workshop Agenda: The Washington Health Security Coalition is proud to sponsor a 6-hour workshop to identify a common set of core principles among those in health care reform and to craft a purposeful language to communicate that identity.
The workshop will include elements of these steps: Space is limited. Register now to ensure your place. Workshop Cost: $50. Limited scholarships considered for those with financial need. To secure a place in this workshop: Please send a check in the amount of $50.00 per person, payable to: Physicians for a National Health Program Western Washington, (PNHPWW) Mail to: Larry Kalb, P.O.
