Why I'm So Vitriolic

For anyone old enough, the memory of President Nixon's wave from the helicopter as his resignation in disgrace became a reality was one of the terrible and great moments of the American experience.

Presidents have broken the law, before that and since, and gotten away with it. But John Dean, the man who broke open Watergate has said of the Bush domestic spying "that is the first time I have heard a President admit an impreachable offense".

And why did he admit to it - not just admit it, but point to it with pride? Because he knew that the opposition party would sit on their hands and do nothing while he had weeks to persuade the American people that he broke THEIR laws in THEIR interest. There's a very long history of leaders' suggesting to citizens that they are a better guardian of the people's interest than laws. Of course the bulk of it came before the advent of democracy and then, during terrible dictatorships.

In order not to appear weak on a war their opponents are LOSING - both in fact and in the polls - Democrats are letting the President break the law with impunity, stifling even toothless calls for censure. Even Donna Brazile is embarrassed, as her commentary in "Roll Call" suggests.

I believe that people who take being re-elected more seriously than the job we re-elect them for should not be sent back to office. Certainly we who believe that OUR party exists to protect the Constitution from the demagoguery of THEIR party should do nothing at all to help them.

"Leaders" of the Demcoratic Party who are not even willing to censure a law-breaking, unpopular President of the opposition party are not leaders. They sap our strength. Their presence in the legislature does not represent a "win". They do not add to our numbers. At best, they hold our ideals and principles hostage to voiceless neutrality. At worst, they are active collaborators with people who hate the Constitution and hate the law.

No plan, just critique.
Nothing that connects people.
Nothing to inspire, rally around.
No discussion of what action should follow from your opinions.  You are trolling.

Break it down dlaw:
Is your lonely "screw the sellouts" diatribe going to bring new people into the process to vote?
Is your goal to suppress Cantwell votes so she will take notice?
Does a Republican victory promote "progressive" ends because we need to hit bottom so change is possible?
Will Sam Brownback vote differently if Mark Wilson is in the Senate?

WHERE IS THE "WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS" PIECE OF YOUR ARGUEMENT?

There is no Howard Dean in the Washington senate race to benefit from the critique. Your bitching accomlishes nothing.  You shouldn't even get to call it progressive politics.  To be progressive it must achieve a minimum threshold of "do no harm."  It must move people.

This is about as progressive as my dungeons and dragons homeboys bitching about girls that didn't like them.

The critique has its place, but without a positive alternative vision it could just as easily feed the dark side.  Maybe a leader will save you.

who is temporarily paused at 34% popularity.  If you handed this opportunity to the likes of Newt Gingrich, Grover Norquist, and Frank Luntz, there would be no question that they would jump on it.

The idea is to open and win a national referendum of the Neocons and the GOP that went along for the ride, not to rack up another loss.

The idea is to push both Murray and Cantwell into backing this referendum.  Otherwise they aren't aren't advancing Democratic discourse.

I'm pissed off too.  Perplexed -- curious, even.  Why are things this way?  Why don't they fight this attack on our democracy?

In Bunuel's Avenging Angel (a film), a large gathering of genteel people find that they cannot leave a party.

They don't know why -- and they can't admit it to themselves, even though it becomes increasingly absurd to deny it as each guest approaches the door to leave, over and over and then retreats with some lame excuse until the night is over and next day begins and their excuses have been overwhelmed by the reality of their situation.   It's too crazy.  There's nothing stopping anyone from leaving, they simply don't.

Days go by (if I remember correctly -- I saw this years ago).  Pigs and dogs run in and out.  At least one person dies. There's no way to get the body out of the room -- not that there's any barrier, again, just that, psychologically, they cannot.

They break into the pipes in the walls for water.  They use a closet for the bathroom.  It stinks, they stink, and they hate each other for stinking and dying and being inexplicably stuck.  They talk about their absurd situation in secret clusters.  Their party clothes become increasingly soiled and disreputable.

That's where we are, it seems.  Stuck, unable to even understand or frame the stuckness.  And perhaps that's where our legislators are.  Maybe it's a culture thing.  Maybe key people have been bribed or threatened.  Maybe it's a kind of mysterious group-think.  Why can't they walk through the door?  Wake up, legislators, America needs you!

When I woke up to work on the Howard Dean campaign, I realized that, when Nixon resigned, I had patted myself on the back, said "we won," and quit paying attention. I went to the polls every election and voted "D".

By the time Howard started asking why so many Democrats were supporting a unilateral invasion of Iraq and unfunded mandates like NCLB, I was so frustrated with the Democratic Party I was ready to just quit on the whole thing. But part of what Howard Dean said to me was if I wanted things to change, I had to become involved and work to bring about that change.

That is why Maria Cantwell does not get a free pass from me in the primary. That is why I had to hold my nose to vote for John Kerry and that is why I will work like hell to make sure Hillary, Joe Biden, or any other DLC "Corpora-crats" get the nomination in 2008.

Am I a purist? OK. Call me what you will but what I won't be is a silent witness any longer.

Peace,
