Economic Populism - the New Republican Theme

I'm listening to the Michael Savage program right now and I'm just amazed at the deftness with which the substitute host, Peter Weisbach, is hitting the DPW deal, *Wal-Mart*, and Free Trade and making Economic Populism a Republican theme.

He's talking down Corporate America. He's talking up the working man. He's got Republican caller after Republican caller smacking down Wal-Mart and globalization. He's blaming capitalists. I mean he is actually using the word "capitalists". He's bad-mouthing China after both parties have seemingly agreed not to point out the hideous, repressive record of the "People's" Republic of China.

Of course he is also bad-mouthing immigrants, blaming government regulation and suggesting that a more Christian America would have capitalists that cared more about workers.

The point is that this Republican talking head is having an easier time with Economic Populism than any Democrat could imagine.

Historically, there's been left and right wing populism.  I favor the left.  The right gets into nativism, protectionism, anti-immigration and so forth.   Nasty stuff.

I totally support making the case for populism, class warfare, us against them, from a left-wing, social justice, addressing inequalities vantage point.  It's been terribly disappointing to me that the Democratic Party hasn't been able to bring itself to seize this opportunity.  Al Gore started on that path and got shouted down for trying to incite "class warfare".  My guess is the current Dem leaders (vs the grassroots) is still tied to status quo and their addiction to corporate largese.

I will note that the creation and maintenance of the middle class has always been a delibrate policy decision.  In a pure capitalist economy, the rich get richer.  Without some mechanicism of wealth redistribution, there will be no middle class.  Which pretty much sums up my enthusiasm for the New Deal and Great Society.

Off the backs of the People"

of course, with the semi comatose Dem message machine of then ... and now ! ...

the thugs got away with it.

(note to belltowner - since history started in 2000, you don't need to read any of this stuff)

lots of their crapaganda has these themes of "we're on the side of the little guy who is getting stomped by the bureaucrat pinheads"

when you take the comatose Dem responses, AND,

add in the fact that most of the bottom 90% don't think government or corporate is gonna take care of them if anything goes bad, AND

add in the fact that the great Dem accomplishements in government in hte last 2+ decades are making excuses, AND

add in the fact that those making the excuses make a lot more than that bottom 90%

then the thug job of dissing government isn't too hard.
