Centrist Landrieu and HI Delegation screw ANWR

Centrist Mary Landrieu, Daniel Inouye, who joined the centrists on the filibuster "compromise" and Daniel Akaka, all joined the Republicans to pass the budget measure funding drilling in ANWR.

As I said I am not a hawk on ANWR but it was a great issue for the Dems and Cantwell's signature issue and now it's dead.

Also a poll came out that shows Americans favor censuring President Bush.

has always, always, ALWAYS supported drilling in ANWR and everywhere else.  Cantwell and Kerry understand this, which is why they always try to get GOP votes against drilling.  She's the senator from Louisiana, not Vermont.  LA has a giant oil and gas business.  Breaux was the same way.

This highlights why it's important to add to the Dem  ranks in the Senate.  On drilling issues we'll always lose LA, so we need more votes to make up the difference.

The budget bill vote report I saw had the tally at 51-49, with Landrieu the only Democrat joining the side of evil.  Republicans voting nay were:

  • Lincoln Chafee (RI)
  • Norm Coleman (MN)
  • Susan Collins (ME)
  • Mike DeWine (OH)
  • John Ensign (NV)

Yes, Olympia Snowe was on the dark side.  But notice Ensign ... he may be in a more precarious position against Jack Carter than previously thought.

In any case, Inouye and Akaka were on the side of rectitude with respect to ANWR ... at least when it comes to including it in the budget bill.  I realize that they've sided with the bad guys on ANWR most of the time, based on some sort of quid pro quo having to do with support from Ted Stevens for the rights of Native Hawaiians.  Yet, somehow, that bill never seems to get passed, "despite" Stevens's "support".  You'd think Dan and Dan would have wised up by now to how they're being played by old Ted.

Parenthetically, support for the rights of Native Hawaiians was one of the amendments we made to the 43rd LD platform.  Such a platform plank would never have been brought up, much less included, in a typically-diffuse round of precinct caucuses.
