Debi Golden To End Campaign

[Ed: Front paged as important breaking news]

Breaking News: Debi Golden will be announcing that she is ending her campaign for Washington State Senator of the 48th District.

A couple of questions for Washblog members:

  • Does Debi have a political future with the Democratic party?  Can she bounce back in a future election?

  • Will you openly support Rodney Tom's candidacy against Luke Esser, or will you not be able to because of how this played out?

... I certainly hope she is a candidate in the future.

I will support Tom against Esser and I hope that the 48th Dems do to.  However, Tom should expect some hard questions and critical feedback from his Democratic constituents.

the possible factors that went into this.

Didn't she have a good chance?  Wasn't there benefit to her staying in?

I don't know how to judge her future chances -- but don't intuitively see why this would harm her chances for future races.

I have a lot of respect for Debi and hope she does run for something in the future - maybe Bellevue City Council next year?
But Rodney is a better fundraiser, has more name recognition, is a great fit for the 48th population at large, and as a 48th LD constituent I've always felt he was worthy of representing me even if I don't agree with him on every issue.

Debi is more progressive, but I can live with the fact I'll only agree with 90% of Rodney's votes as State Senator (as oppposed to 98% of Debi's if she were in the role), because his odds of beating Luke Esser are about 10 times more likely than Debi's, and he is a lousy representative of the 48th LD.

Mayberry Machivellians.

What I've read about this situation has been random - random enough to make me feel that my gut feeling is close enough for government work.

The good old Dan Evans Republicans have been pretty much gone since RayGun's day.  If I remember correctly, the state of WA Republican Party made it to the front page of the Wall Street Journal in '88 for putting in a plank ... outlawing witchcraft ?? or some lunacy.

Too bad an upcoming progressive got chucked for "electability" - that kind of clever by half political calculus has consistently proven to be political checkers these last few ... decades.
