Impeachment: Partisan Politics or a Defense Against Tyranny?
Will impeaching President Bush and Vice President Cheney really a waste of time? Is there no positive benefit to impeachment? Is there a diffence between an impeachment investigation and any of the myriad investigations now underway in congress? Is it political suicide?
These questions and more will be answered by experts this Sunday, June 24th at Seattle University. Not only will your questions be answered but you'll have an opportunity to teach the gospel of impeachment to others.
The impeachment of President Clinton did not serve to protect the Constitution or prevent abuses of power. Those issues were never in question.
It was a political act designed to weaken the Clinton presidency, soil the Democrats brand and give the GOP the edge in the next election. Today, when our leaders have seriously compromised the Constitution, restricted our civil rights, undermined the balance of powers, engaged in criminal acts and defrauded both Congress and the nation, some of us still shy away from impeachment. We associate it with the partisan witch-hunt and media circus of the Clinton impeachment instead of the orderly process that led to President Nixon's resignation and saved our democracy.
We cannot restore our nation to health by simply electing a new leader. On Sunday, June 24th Washington for Impeachment will host a forum "Our Constitution in Crisis". Guest speakers will be veteran journalist and author David Lindorff, prosecuting attorney and author Elizabeth de la Vega, and Constitutional expert Phil Burke, founder of impeachbush.tv. Washington for Impeachment founder Linda Boyd will MC. State Senator Eric Oemig, author of Joint Memorial 8016 calling for investigations to impeach, will speak.
The event will be held at Pigott Hall at Seattle University (corner of E. Marion and 12th Ave). Doors open at 12PM for meet and greet. The program will begin at 1PM. A donation of $10 per person is requested. "Our Constitution in Crisis" is more than a speaker's forum, it is a call to action. The audience will have a chance to participate and receive training to become an effective advocates for impeachment; the Constitutional remedy for lawlessness and abuse of power. Materials will be provided. In the end, we are the guardians of the destiny of our nation. It is up to us to decide what kind of government we will have. Impeachment gives us the power to do so.
