What is Trolling?

I know this is a waste of some peoples' time (those who have been doing this for a long time and thus think they know more than most), but what is "trolling"? I received a warning message about it, and I have no idea what it is.

After I posted a diary titled "Three Little Monkeys" I got this warning message about trolling. If trolling means asking for opinions, or stating one's own opinion, what the heck is the use of the blog then?

since I didn't see any comments about trolling in the other diary (unless it was removed), that he is referring to the warning above every comment before it is posted:

Trolling is not tolerated here. Any comment may be deleted by a site admin, and all trolls will be deleted. This is fair warning. If you don't know what trolling is, then you're probably not about to do it, so don't worry. :-)

Short answer.

A troll is someone who posts specifically with the intent of upsetting people and/or disrupting discourse. Some folks seem to love getting a community riled up and screaming at each other.

Since some poorly-expressed or hastily-written comments may offend people unintentionally, polite folks often check for a pattern of inflammatory posting before getting out the troll-repellant. (On DailyKos, trolls can expect to be responded to with recipes).

Yeah, if conservative Dems were WINNING...

...you'd have a point.

But they're not. So you don't.

Dems who are taking strong stands - against corruption, the war, reckless Bush policies - are the ones putting the party together. "Triangulating" Dems are parasites who do no political work.
