Don't newspapers talk to you before they endorse your opponent?

The Centralia Chronicle apparently doesn't want anything like talking to Richard DeBolt's Democratic opponent to get in the way of endorsing him. Seriously, they not only endorsed DeBolt almost four months before the Primary election, they endorsed him even before talking to Mike Rechner, the Democrat facing him in the 20th LD.

Go figure.

The endorsement from the Chronicle is here.

And, from Mike's letter to the Chronicle:

Let me be clear, this letter is not written out of bitterness or spite, but out of concern for the journalistic integrity of your paper. If this is how the Chronicle looks at important issues, how can we as readers be sure that we're getting the whole picture about any story written in this paper? The Chronicle has a duty to the public to look at all sides of an issue and then issue an opinion if need be. In this case, the Chronicle has committed a great disservice to the readers.

I would think it would only be fair and balanced to retract this endorsement until your paper has had an opportunity to speak with me, as is the normal procedure for nearly every political campaign. I want to have the chance to talk about the issues for the 20th district, Richard DeBolt's record in the house, and my vision for what needs to be done in Olympia. I think your readers would benefit from knowing where I stand on things like education in our public schools, working to attract more family wage jobs to the district and ensuring access to affordable health insurance for everyone, before casting their votes this fall.

I hope that the Chronicle will offer its' readers a chance to hear about both of the candidates before November, and do the right thing now. Retract your endorsement, get all the facts, opine on the matter, and let the people decide. Our district will benefit from having a pragmatic, honest, and open discussion about what lies before us.
