Senator Eric Oemig to sponsor resolution [on US policy in Iraq ]

[editor's note, by The Left Shue] According to this recent entry from David Postman's Blog:
"Oemig said he'll be at an event organized by the group Saturday in Bellevue. He said he is still working on the wording of the joint memorial, but said it probably would not include talk of impeachment, "but certainly would request an investigation."

[Author's note: I changed the title of this post to reflect the info posted by Chad, above. Next time, I guess I should call the legislator... What was that class in blogger school!? (My apologies to Senator Oemig.)]

I just got off the phone with Linda Boyd, Director of Eastside Fellowship of Reconciliation.  EFOR announced last night that Senator Eric Oemig of Washington's 45th Legislative District plans to sponsor their resolution calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush in the state Senate.

The event starts at noon at The Bradford Center, 702 108th Ave NE,  Bellevue.  Senator Oemig is scheduled to speak at 1PM.  EFOR is requesting that people contact their Senators to ask for their co-sponsorship and support and contact their Representatives to ask for a companion bill to be sponsored in the House.  You can find your legislators' contact information on Washington State's District Finder.

See below for more details on the event.

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:  Linda Boyd, Director, Eastside Fellowship of Reconciliation

STATE SENATOR ERIC OEMIG WILL PUBLICLY ANNOUNCE HIS INTENTION TO INTRODUCTION A RESOLUTION FOR THE IMPEACHMENT OF PRESIDENT BUSH AND VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY TO THE WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATURE.

When:  Saturday, February 10th, 1:00 PM
Where:  The Bradford Center , 752 108th Avenue NE, downtown Bellevue (one block west of Bellevue Square Mall).

More than 15,000 people have signed petitions throughout the Seattle area calling for impeachment of Bush and Cheney for "high crimes and misdemeanors."

Congress has failed to protect our jeopardized Constitution and basic rights of Americans.

"What agenda item could be more important than restoring the U.S. Constitution that safeguards our basic freedoms?" says Linda Boyd, director of Eastside Fellowship of Reconciliation.

Rather than sitting on their hands while the U.S. Congress dithers, citizen activists are insisting on impeachment through their state legislatures. When a state legislature adopts a resolution to impeach, it goes to the floor of the House of Representatives as a privileged item.

New Mexico has a resolution moving through its legislative chambers. And Vermont is expected to announce a resolution for impeachment very soon. Washington State may soon join with those states to call this administration to account.

The four articles for impeachment of Bush-Cheney proposed in Washington State are:

  • Illegal wiretapping;
  • Lying to Congress to initiate a war of aggression in Iraq;
  • Torture and extraordinary rendition; and disdain for LAW and checks & balances – the very bedrock of our Democracy

"Let's hope Washington State legislators will vote IMPEACHMENT. Concerned citizens of conscience have had it with war crimes and torture. A stand against impeachment would mean a legislator approves spying on Americans, destroying our treasured, hard-won freedoms, and an imperial President", says Boyd.

I wrote such an impeachment resolution, based on the "Jefferson rule" that I read about on DKos, in our 34th district caucus last year and it passed with cheers. It also passed at the King County convention.

I went to the State Convention in Yakima 2005, to see what would happen to it, knowing other counties had passed similar resolutions.

Nothing happened. They ran out of time to even vote on the long list of resolutions, except for just a few. Many people were disappointed or angry.

I am ecstatic! I saw Eric yesterday at the clean Elections hearings in Olympia. GO ERIC! I gotta call his office!
